So far I've only listened to the Sonny Rollins & Lee Morgan CD's. Listened to each one 3 times and they're great....as advertised. I really liked Lee Morgan. As a former high school stage band trumpet player, I'm a little biased towards the horn players.

Most recent three:

A big fan of Anat Cohen, especially after seeing her live a couple of years ago. "Eastern Blok" is new to me, which I recently stumbled on when digging around the net for Matt Ullery. Apparently, it's one his projects - a sort of Balkan/Roots/Jazz Hybrid. Being a fan of regional folk musics, as well as folk-jazz fusions, this one grabbed me right away. Really looking forward to digging into it. Jana Herzen is apparently the founder of Motema Records, and just released this folk-jazz album, after about a ten year layoff as a leader. Samples sound really good, and I'm thinking it's one both my wife and I will enjoy . . .

I got a Hastings $20 gift card for Christmas, so here is what I bought.

Miles Davis - Miles Davis in Europe (Davis, Coleman, Hancock, Carter, Williams) $4.99

Stanley Clarke - School Days $4.99

Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus (and second bonus disc with Newk's Time and Tenor Madness) $8.99

So I basically bought five albums for twenty bucks. Peace and goodwill.

As well as the Vinyl on the Vinyl thread, I got the following two at a record fair today

Winter Oranges -- Graham Collier & the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra
Bread & Circuses -- Graham Collier And The Collective

(Graham was an occasional poster on this forum until he died last year)

Well, after lunch a couple of days ago, my wife and I happened to be in the neighborhood of a used music and game store. I perused the bargain section and bought:

Woody Herman - The Thundering Herds, 1945-1947: This is my first Herman album, and I quite like Flip Phillips and Bill Harris on this one. I didn't know that Woody Herman also sang.

Roy Eldridge - Little Jazz: This is my first Eldridge album. The sound is surprisingly good given the recordings are over 70 years old. Even after 10 years of listening to jazz, I am still playing catch-up.

John Zorn - Music for Children: This didn't immediately appeal to me, but I'll revisit it soon.

Jane Ira Bloom - Modern Drama: Some people might wonder why a saxophonist would focus solely on soprano saxophone, but Jane Ira Bloom makes me wonder why more saxophonists don't.

Gerry Mulligan and the Concert Jazz Band - In Concert: I haven't listened to it yet, but I have high expectations based on the Village Vanguard album.

Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else: As I tend to snatch up anything with Hank Jones, I'm surprised that I didn't already own this undisputed classic. This has to be one of Jones's best sideman performances, and the album is as good as you would expect given the musicians involved.

I picked this up used for 99 cents because I didn't have anything by Adderley besides the work he did with Miles Davis. As it is on Curb Records I thought it might be a budget release of some of his Blue Note tracks, but it certainly doesn't have that Blue Note sound. Much of it is either Cannonball playing over lush orchestration, or with a small latin combo. Very pleasant but not great improvising. There is no personnel or recording info. Does anyone know much about these recordings? What label they were done for? Who plays on it? It really has me curious.

I just ordered Tony Williams' first two solo records on CD. I now own every one of his solo records.

I really dig the Pat Metheny Unity Band CD that I picked up a few months ago too. Highly recommended.

Still catching up on ought-twelve. Two and a half for me, half for my wife

EDIT: Note to Mods: Can we update the "what are you listening to" and "what jazz did you just purchase" threads to reflect the new year? Thanks!
