My Odd Miles Davis Collection

Here are the Miles Davis albums I have.

Prestige Profiles
Miles Davis in Europe
Miles in Tokyo
Highlights from the Plugged Nickel
The Essential Miles Davis 3.0
Around the World

None of these came out while he was alive, but they cover most of his lineups. My Coltrane collection is even worse. Peace and goodwill.

Europe and Tokyo were out when he was alive.

I only just started investing some cash into Davis. I bought all (bar one) the metal spine releases. Seemed as though they covered a wide breadth of his music. If you don't mind the long box versions (which are basically the exact same as the metal spines) you can get them very cheaply.

Thanks for the correction. Both of the CD's say "2005" on them, so I just assumed. Peace and goodwill.

There are two tunes from those on the Prestige Profiles Miles Davis CD. My Coltrane collection is even worse.

Prestige Profiles John Coltrane
John Coltrane, Ken Burns Jazz
My Favorite Things: Coltrane at Newport
Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall

Most of my jazz collection is from the 90's and 00's because I prefer modern recording technology. I do have some 50's and 60's jazz by Davis, Coltrane, Monk, Corea, Evans, and Rollins. Sonny Rollins is my favorite from back then, so I have more by him from those times. As far a more current stuff goes, I really like Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau. Peace and goodwill.

Not to be a pita, but I'm having trouble deciphering the intent of your initial post. Are you asking for help in filling out your "odd" collection? If so, I'm sure plenty here would be willing to point you in the direction you seek.

That is the date of issue for the cd versions you happen to have. Both were recorded (obviously) and released when Miles was alive, although the Tokyo session was a Sony (released only in Japan on lp) and not a Columbia, before Sony came to own Columbia.

No, I am not asking for guidance. I know what Miles Davis albums are out there and which ones are highly regarded. I very rarely start a topic, so I decided to start this one to share a different perspective than is usually expressed here. Thanks for all of the responses. Peace and goodwill.

I started off my Miles Davis collection in the late 1970s with the more rock-influenced albums, such as Live-Evil and Agharta, as I was mainly a rock fan then and only just getting into jazz. I then went backwards, buying the Gil Evans collaborations, Kind of Blue and many of the classic 1960s quintet ones. I also bought some of his post-retirement ones, but liked very few of them. I also bought the Prestige albums, which were at that time available in Britain as cheap double LPs, but I never really took to them.

Since the advent of CDs, I have mostly concentrated upon his material from the late 1950s to the early 1970s, with just the odd one or two from before Milestones and from after the Cellar Door Sessions.

What I'd really like to see released would be the full gigs that appeared in a rather reduced fashion on the Fillmore album.
