Jazz for the Heist.

Hello Folks,

Look, I'm going to shoot straight here in terms of Jazz, I'm a novice. I know the basics, the 101 of Jazz. I'm looking to broaden my pallet. However, I'd like to move at my own pace. Meaning, that I'd like to start my er, pallet, with something more akin to my liking then branch out from there and get into the really deep catalog stuff.

So with that said.

I am hunting for Heist-y Jazz. If you could call it that. Jazz with a chip on it's shoulder. Something with weight and gruff. I think the Jazz I'm hunkering for is like this, Imagine the backing band for Dean Martin got into some trouble. A whole lotta trouble makers sorta act. Trouble Makin' Jazz.

or as a friend liked to say "Man, You're hunting for that Pulp Fiction Jazz, That Film Noir Jazz."

And I suppose so. Yeah, some mean stuff... like jazz grinding down the highway in a boiler* looking for the next job to pull off.



That sorta Jazz... any suggestions?

(I, for the note of it, enjoy Mister Davis' soundtrack to that french Elevator movie, the name escapes me currently, but you know the one.)

no sir, I am not from the UK (my friend who is however turned me on to John Zorn's Dark City record... but needless to say that was too dark.)


I've checked out the Jazz on Film record in my early searches... But I was looking for something that had a master's touch to it say?

Something with some swing and heft to it really.... It's hard to articulate what I'm hearing in that ol' in the head radio.

interesting suggestion thanks... however, going back on topic what other ideas or suggestions for the type of jazz I'm looking for? (Heist Jazz?)

Killimanjaro darkjazz assemble, bohren and der club of gore, and just for the hell of eventhough its punk swing big bad voodoo daddy might tickle your fancie. I would also suggest looking into some of the older movie soundtracks, like that of blaxploitation films. Allot of the soundtracks out of the seventies early eighties were heavily influenced by jazz, escpecially things with clint eastwood in them. I really like the dirty harry soundtrack.

This one might not be for the heist per se. And also might be alittle to complex for you, not insult your intelligence its just allot people just seem to think of this record as an over your head kinda record. But "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" by "Charles Mingus" is an amazing album and when I listen to it Im always takin back to a dark city for some reason. One person said "Its reminds me of a soundtrack to a porno I really wanna see but just hasnt been filmed yet". I mean This record was really ahead of its time, and honestly has never been touched in my opionion. As to scope, as well as light and darkness brought foward in a jazz recording. If you put on this cd in your car at night, while driving around in the city you will know what I mean. Im usually thinkin to myself "Mingus made this while watching Naked City".

Thanks... I'll have to give this a listen. and I'm not insulted, as I've stated I'm getting my feet wet with jazz. I know the novice stuff of jazz, you know the standards... but I want to get deeper. So this as complex as it maybe could be a good way to do that, instead of dipping my feet into the water, might as well dive right in.

Yea man anytime, and sometimes it is. I've found with complex stuff you have to give it multiple listens. Because sometimes it doesn't translate right away, because its not something your use too. So your mind automatically rejects it. You ever wonder why certain bands you hate at the time you hear them, then years down the road your like "why didn't I love this stuff?" So just keep that in mind, I remember when my dad handed me a copies of deep purple book of talisman on cassetteway back in the day. And I hated it so much because the sound quality wasn't what I was use too. So immediately I was out of it. The same kind of experience happened when my guitar teacher hand me copies of Captain beef hearts "Trout mask replica" and Ornette Coleman's "Shape of jazz to come". I was like is this dude nuts this music is horrible. Now I listen both records on a reguler basis. It also helped that I got into black metal at the same time. And anything back in the day had horrible sound quality. For me my ritual for anything new is lay down in the couch alone. Pour a small cup of cognac, light me up a cigarette and listen to it front to back with the lights off. That way it sort have take away any distraction, and my mind is open.
