killimanjaro darkjazz essemble the new face of jazz?

I've been listening to these guys allot lately and though they are not popular in any community could this be exactly what jazz needs to make it to future generations? Its dark, droning, somewhat heavy, eerie. Its all the things that my generation will stumble upon seeing how instrumental music is a craze now. Should other jazz artists take a que? I mean its been a long time since jazz music make me excited honestly. At points it seems like we went so far out of the box we circled the earth and went back in it. But these guys added in drone, and electronic in, tore down those complex walls and instead played a horror movie for the whole world too see. I'm in gentlemen, and I think y'all should give it a shot too.

I just checked out the YouTube below....

To state upfront: I consider myself an open-minded, forward thinking individual who's down with all kinds of music. So...

Not that it really matters, but why would anyone consider this at all jazz? If this is jazz, then I guess Enya / ambient music is jazz....I just don't see any connection with jazz other than the guys in the band decided to put "jazz" in their name.

I'm not an old man yelling at clouds - really.

At the you-tube link I asked the band to take 'jazz' out of their band name.

Nah its all good that why these board are here arent they? So we can discuss? At first listen I didnt think it was jazz either, but then one of the older gentlemen I know said "This sounds like some beefed up Charles Lloyd, or something from ECM". So I gotta say man, I disagree, because if ECM's output is considered jazz, then this is definantly jazz. I mean maybe there music different influence inside it, but its diffinantly jazz at heart. Like I said, all this overcomplex jazz geeks out there could learn from these guys, cus less is more. Why does jazz not succeed to the massess anymore? Because its over there heads, theres no substance to it. Young people see a bunch of mean old professor looking guys who wanna do nothing but wait for there solo's, and not even have something they can hum to. But these guys man, they stick in your head, they hide in the shadows, and ambush you while you sleep.

This reminds me a lot of late 1960s psychedelia: Both the music and the filming that seems to go along with it suggests some kind of dream. Mood music. Is this what they call ambient?

If you're willing to get into the mood, o.k. - As for myself, I tend to get bored by this very soon, however well it may be played. Never mind if it is jazz; when I listen to jazz (which I do most of the time), I look out for other values.

I geuss you could call ambient, or moody, but I still find it jazzy. I dont know, to me when I listen to it I find it to be like a noir soundtrack that never got made. I found another band thats very similar to these guys, but alittle more what might be considered jazz by you guys to be jazz bohren and de club of gore. Then when I listen to this stuff I kinda find alittle medeski, martin, and wood in there quite a bit so I dont know. Maybe this is all just me probably.

If you want jazz you can hum to, you really ought to seek out "old professor looking guys" playing traditional jazz. Young hip looking jazzplaying people generally play music you can't hum to. That's jazz, and if you don't like it, it's your problem.

Although I wasn't there at the time, I heard that many of peple said electric miles era was not jazz...now it'sknown as jazz fusion. Maybe that sort of thing is whats happening here.Whether consider jazz or not, i found it quite boring. oh well.

It has nothing to do with being an old timer, it has to do with jazz being innovative music instead of music for elevators and shopping malls.

Sound pretty innovative to me, perhaps too innovative by the sounds of it. Cus either it went right over your head, or it was to good cus this no elevator music. Its all good though, some people like to listen to the same old meat and potatoes jazz and otherrs like being on an elevator lol. And yes bein an old timer has allot to do with it. Didnt mean to offend with that just meant that people werent to keen on jazz fusion when it came out, and apparently your not to keen on this so thanks helpin my point along bro.

The new and creative jazz scene is happening in small clubs in NY, in Europe, Chicago and oter places. Check them out, and experience music with more substance than the darkjazzers, who stund dated in comparison.

I dont know man, I like the dark noir. I mean Bitches Brew was my first record so its kind of always stayed with me. And you know I really shouldnt have made all those timer comments cus allot of the older gentlemen around me loved it. So who knows maybe its just anyone on this boards cup of tea. Going threw allot of the stuff on the new releases only thread however theres one dude who keeps posting all these new crazy bands that use electronics, so maybe not I dont know. I just think Jazz has always had a light and a dark side, and I really like the dark side.

I get it.

If you can't hum to it, it must be jazz...
