Zappa / Mothers of Invention (2012 CD Masters)

A number of the earlier recordings have been remastered (from analog).

Of all the Zappa/Mothers that I've heard these two titles have always impressed me more than any others.

HOT RATS - FRANK ZAPPA / BURNT WEENY SANDWICH - The MOTHERS of Invention

I haven't heard the vinyl editions in a long time but am delighted with the sound on these two new 2012 CD, remastered from analog editions.

Rock Meets Jazz

Based on the superb sound (and unique music) on the 2012 remasters of 'Hot Rats'
& 'Burnt Weeny Sandwich' I'm tempted to check out four more titles that will be included
in the next batch of 2012 CD reissues - 'The Grand Wazoo', 'Waka/Jawaka', 'Sleep Dirt' & possibly 'Zoot Allures' (all 4 have been remastered from original analog masters).

The "Hot Rats" reissue is the original 1969 vinyl mix rather than the (arguably inferior) 1987 mix. The new cd is a little shorter in length ("Gumbo Variations" was extended by 4 mins on the 87 version) but from what I have heard from samples on the web this in an essential purchase. One of my favourite albums just got better.

Does anyone have any information on the differences between the wider range of these 2012 CDs and the earlier releases?

Here's the low down on the first batch.......

http://www.gandsmusic.com/ZappaCD1.htm

"Most of you will be aware that the entire back catalogue on Rykodisc was removed from sale in December 2011.

But it's all being re-released starting on July 30 with the twelve titles below, with another twelve titles to follow each month until November.

The seven titles below which have been newly re-mastered all have significantly improved sound compared to the previous CD versions

The reissues are now on Zappa Records and come in clear jewel cases. Uncle Meat is 2 CDs in a single size case. The artwork is mostly unchanged except for credits and logos, though the print quality is improved. Other changes are noted below."

Freak Out!

Produced from an FZ digital remix done in 1987, so very similar to the Ryko edition, down to identical track times. (If you want the vinyl version - it's on MOFO!)

Absolutely Free

Analog transfer 2012 by Joe Travers and re-mastered by Doug Sax 2012.
All track times identical to the Ryko version.

Lumpy Gravy

FZ digital re-edit circa 1993 (with Spence Chrislu).
Part One: 15:49 Part Two: 15:55

We’re Only In It For The Money

2011 transfer of a digital master. Track times identical to the Ryko edition.
The booklet has been folded differently to restore the Sgt Pepper parody as the front cover.

Cruising With Ruben & The Jets

2011 transfer of the 1984 digital remix - yes, that one!

Uncle Meat

2011 transfer of the 1987 digital remix. Track times identical to the Ryko edition.

Hot Rats

FZ-edited original analog master transferred and re-mastered by Bernie Grundman 2008

Burnt Weeny Sandwich

Analog transfer by Joe Travers 2012. Re-mastered by Bob Ludwig Gateway Mastering 2012.

Weasels Ripped My Flesh

Analog transfer by Joe Travers 2012. Re-mastered by Bob Ludwig Gateway Mastering 2012.

Chunga’s Revenge

Analog transfer by Joe Travers 2012. Re-mastered by Bob Ludwig Gateway Mastering 2012.

Fillmore East, June 1971

Analog transfer by Joe Travers 2012. Re-mastered by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab 2012. Part two of Willie The Pimp is restored.

Just Another Band From L.A.

Analog transfer by Joe Travers 2012. Re-mastered by Bob Ludwig Gateway Mastering 2012.

I love Zappa and I have most of the Ryko CDs, but I don't know if I can really afford to buy them all again in these new versions. I suppose I need to do a little more homework and nail down which of these are different enough to merit buying them again.

Thanks for this info. I might have to spring for Hot Rats and Waka Jawaka if nothing else.

Concerning Sleep Dirt.

This new edition possibly sounds possibly
even better than it did on the original vinyl.

I never really appreciated how good this LP
record was at the time, and never bothered
with the Ryko CD, with the added vocals etc.

No (unwanted) "added vocals" and "remixing"
on this new 2012 edition, so that should be
enough reason to make sure you don't miss
out on getting hold of this classy album (as it
was originally recorded), and now available in
superb high quality remastered sound.

If there were a guide to the best of instrumental
Frank Zappa/Mothers Sleep Dirt [aka "Hot Rats III]
would deserve to be very very high up the listing.

Freak out

I bought the Ryodisk Freak Out several years ago, was disapointed that "You Didn't Try To Call Me" faded out the ending unlike the original LP, so does anyone know if the reissued CD is complete with no fade outs?

Freak Out

By all accounts the new 2012 edition is the same as the old Ryko (with all tracks having identical running times).

The original mix for Freak Out is available on MOFO, direct from the Zappa.com website. There are two versions, two- and four-CD sets, and both include the vinyl mix.

Bongo Fury - Zappa / Captain Beefheart / The Mothers

This is a great live album and I recommend the 2012 CD edition to anyone curious enough to wonder how Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart & The Mothers of Invention sounded when they played together in concert back in 1975. The disc also includes two 1975 studio recordings - "Sam With The Showing Scalp Flat Top" & "Cucamonga".

Sound quality wise this CD edition of Bongo Fury accurately reflects the recorded musical vibes as they were first heard back in 1975 on the original DiscReet LP.
