There's also a new Tubby Properbox and - most exciting of all - a live gig recording (in amazing sound quality) of Tubby and Tony Oxley!

Watch this space!
Tubby Hayes and Tony Oxley, now that will be something I've never heard!

News just in.....

As yet to be confirmed but it looks likely that a MASTER TAPE of the Tubby's Groove album has been discovered!
As we all know, the Tempo masters were disposed of sometime around the early 1970's, so this is a major find.

More details when I get them.

More details are now available on the Acrobat website here:

Although I think all these tracks have been previously reissued in various releases over the years it would be nice to have them all in one collection and there's the added attraction of a 6,000 word booklet by Simon!

The Long Shadow of The Little Giant

I'm very pleased to announce that - finally - my book on Tubby is complete. A spot of editing and tidying up and I'm done. That is except for trying to get someone to publish it.

It's been a true labour of love and I've learned a hell of a lot from it - especially from the guys who worked with him. I really hope that when it finally appears it does what I want it to do; make people realise that Tubby was the real deal - 100% Proof!

I look forward to reading it. Good luck finding a publisher sooner rather than later!

Quick question, Simon: I notice that there are now two 4 cd Proper boxes ready for release. Can you give us any details on their contents? Does the one covering the later years (entitled 'Little Giant Steps') actually contain the complete long unavailable "New York Sessions" with Clark Terry?

Little Giant Steps

The first set "The Little Giant" is a reissue of the compilation Proper issued in 2007.

The second volume "Little Giant Steps" is brand new and yes, it features all of Tubby's albums as a leader from 1959 to mid-1962, including both sets he recorded in America, as well as an extensive booklet and rare photos.

Amazon UK have full track listings.

Looking forward to the book. Judging by Simon's sleeve notes on the various Tubby releases of late it should be very readable and extremely interesting. Also looking forward to the new Properbox which I've had on order since it first appeared for pre order on Amazon.

A question, are there any more archive releases in the pipeline? The two so far have been really good - please say yes.

Congatulations Simon

Looking forward to it

Thanks!

I'm very proud of the Proper Vol. 2 and of the Complete Tempo on Acrobat. After writing sleeve notes for something like fifteen Tubby albums, it does get a little hard not to repeat myself, but thankfully I'm still uncovering new information which helps to keep things fresh.

I'm hoping that the next two archive releases will be out sometime very soon. They're both cracking - one by the quartet with Louis Stewart and the other by the big band. I'll post a release date as soon as I have one.

In the meantime, don't overlook the Jazz From London CD on Acrobat, with Tubby's first ever recording on vibes and an amazing two-tenor duel with Jimmy Skidmore on Caravan.

Finally, I have a new album out next week, although it looks likely that playing will take second place to writing in the future, or possibly even replace it altogether. I have yet to decide.

Is the album a vinyl only release? I seem to remember reading somewhere that was going to be the case. And as for you giving up playing I don't even want to think about it, I always look forward to any gig you play as anyone will know who has seen you that they are in for a good evening's entertainment and very good jazz.

Thank you Ray.

The album is principally a vinyl release, although it will be available on CD only at gigs.

Just got my copy of 'Little Giant Steps' and really looking forward to playing it and of course reading the booklet notes that come with it.

Hoping to get to the Spice of Life on Good Friday, please Simon bring some of the Cds of your new album with you on that one.

The new album is available from tomorrow so I should have copies available.

Watch out for a new Ronnie Scott 2-CD set, with lots of music that's never been out on CD before.

From what I can make out on the Proper Music site this new compilation features in addition to the Tempo Tubby's Groove recordings, the first six Tubbs albums recorded for Fontana [Tubbs, Tubbs in NY, Equation in Rhythm, Down in the Village, Late Spot at Scott's, Return Visit plus the Palladium Jazz Date shared with Cleo Laine, with 3 tracks from Tubbs. Simon will correct me if this is wrong. Also, from what I can ascertain these Fontana recordings with the exception of the Palladium one are in stereo. The New York and Return Visit tracks are very hard to find in stereo now so for anyone who hasn't already got these, this release is an absolute MUST. Plus of course the liner notes which always add a new dimension to any historic releases (although available on iTunes when will Apple and the other download companies address the thorny issue of liner notes - or lack of them?).
