Here's a video featuring the Oscar Hernandez quintet. Oscar's one of the busiest men in Latin music. He's a co-founder, pianist, & musical director of the legendary Spanish Harlem Orchestra. Enjoy!

....and here's one of the reasons Calle 54 is one of the greatest music documentaries ever! Michel Camilo trio feat. Anthony Jackson and Horacio 'El Negro' Hernandez. All of these guys play their butt's off, chk out El Negro's one-handed (+ 2 legged) drum roll during his solo!

....and here's a head's up on an event that anyone hanging out at a Jazz site should be able to enjoy!

Chano Dominguez & Dafnis Prieto - Live at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola - broadcast live on Thur., Jan. 10.

Owning multiple albums from both artists I'm very much looking forward to this! Dominguez is a genius virtuoso pianist from Spain and the leading proponent of what's come to be known as 'Flamenco Jazz'. I've seen him live and the man is a straight-up monsta on the piano! "....Prieto is easily the most impressive young drummer to come on the Jazz scene during the last decade...." - All About Jazz.

Whoa, I watched that one five times in a row! Had some Camilo but hadn't yet heard that one.

Thanks again guys for all the recommendations, been going through them all and will continue doing so.

I also found this one I wanted to share:

Chucho Valdes and Buika - El Ultimo Trago

Has vocals, as these are all Chavela Vargas songs, but they are sung in that style which I always enjoy - even though I'm not a fan of jazz vocals generally. I highly recommend it.

Glad you enjoyed that Camilo clip, it really is a smoka, ain't it!? As I mentioned, it comes from the movie; 'Calle 54', truthfully one of the greatest music documentaries ever made. I just checked on Amazon and it's available for less than 10 bucks used, that would be 10 dollars well spent my friend!

Camilo went into the studio with this trio and recorded 'Triangulo'. He than followed with a double CD; 'Live At The Blue Note' recorded with Hernandez on drums and the late, great Charles Flores on bass. Great stuff! Recorded on the Telarc label which is know for exceptional sonics, if you're into that kind of thing (I certainly am!)

I just wanted to recommend seeing Arturo O'Farrill. I caught his sextet (with special guest Donald Harrison) at the Detroit Jazz Festival last year. I had originally planned on leaving midway through his set to catch the entirety of Fred Hersch's set at another stage. When it came time to leave, however, I simply couldn't pull myself away (I still caught the last of Hersch's set afterward). Like O'Farrill himself, his music was warm and engaging, and the addition of Harrison only upped the ante. I also can't say enough about his band (particularly saxophonist Ivan Renta), which was an incredibly tight unit.

I've never heard O'Farrill live, but I can chime in and recommend this CD:

Excellent choice! I've seen the ALJO a bunch of times and they always deliver the goods. And, as Justin said, his small groups kill, too.

Interesting Arturo O'Farrill story. He used to be the Musical Director/Leader of The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra whom I was fortunate enough to have caught twice in Atlanta. Anyhow, they were touring the old-school way, on a bus. Arturo comes on stage and tells us that somehow/someway the person responsible for the band's charts didn't make the bus in Tenn. so the concert would have to be a looser, more improvised performance. Under normal circumstances this big band performed with stiletto-like precision but on this night the focus was the jam session. Manoman! Don'tchaknow they killed that night! Fact of the matter is having seen them with charts and without, the night they had no charts was absolutely the better performance!

BTW, Arturo plays with his legendary father, Chico O'Farrill, and his Big Band on 'Calle 54'. Another reason to pick it up!

That Valera has been growing on me. After my first listen, I appreciated it more than I liked it (if that makes sense), but now I think I'm engaging it less with my head and more with my heart, which is why my "like" is increasing.

The new Bobby Sanabria hasn't bowled me over like I'd hoped, but at the same time, despite my very busy listening schedule, his album keeps getting played on my stereo, so read into that what you will.

I'm also enjoying this one...

Passarim & Caito Marcondes – Festanca

They like to mix things up a bit, show flashes of different influences, and that's part of its charm for me.

You can stream three album tracks on their bandcamp page...

And that is my favorite performance in the film!

Look out for the new generation of O'Farrill's.... Adam and Zack on the way up... I don't even think their in their 20's yet.
