The Luis Russell Story (1929-1934)

Love the New Orleans feel of this music. Also, more evidence that Henry "Red" Allen was an under-appreciated great.

Michael Brecker - Time Is of the Essence

Michael Brecker - tenor sax
Pat Metheny - guitar
Larry Goldings - organ
Elvin Jones - drums (tracks 1,4,9)
Jeff "Tain" Watts - drums (tracks 2,5,7)
Bill Stewart - drums (3,6,8)

I was in the mood to hear Metheny play straight-ahead jazz, so I played this. This CD is a jazz drummer lover's paradise. Peace and goodwill.

Hampton Hawes Quartet with Jim Hall: All Night Session!
Discs 1 & 2 of 2 (originally issued on 3 LP set)

I listened to this a week ago but a pounding headache diminished my enjoyment at the time. I had to give it another go and it sounds great.

Hutch, I think it's very good. I notice AMG doesn't give it much love (2.5 stars), but I'm really not sure why. All five tunes are Brackeen originals, I believe, and are indeed perhaps a bit on the "challenging" side, but not overly so, I don't think. In fact, I'd say it's pretty darned accessible, all-in-all, striking a good balance in that regard. Stellar rhythm section (Eddie Gomez & DeJohnette) + JH in good form throughout = really can't go too wrong . . .
