I prefer the likes of Jon Hendricks and Eddie Jefferson. And more recently Al Jarreau and Bobby McFerrin.

In contrast, I've always dug the laid back casualness of Chet Baker's singing.

nice list. I agree with everything.

Mark murphy is the best singer imo of the bunch and actually probably my favorite singer of all time. I however much prefer Gil Scott Heron because of all his output.. Ella said about Murphy that it was her only contest and the only singer that she could really look up to.

But seriously, to anyone not knowing Gil Scott Heron, he's my favorite artist from the 70's for sure. Some of his records are amazing. The profoundness of his music doesnt necessarely comes from his voice, but the emotion he sings his songs. The sheer humility is stunning sometimes. What he sings really comes from his heart and its the most amazing singer for that. He really is the most profound singer I have ever heard. The way he sings his words is so real, so true, he really think what he sings and it comes out so naturally. its perfect music imnsho.

I also really like Johnny hartmann, Sinatra, Nat king cole and finally, king pleasure (relatively unknown but a amazing singer, listen to Golden Days)

cheers

Sorry to come back to this post, but I couldn't leave out someone who had quite an influence on my own vocal style; UK's own Georgie Fame.
