A few things. Single-note guitar with just bass sounds thin. It needs either chording on the guitar or a suggestion of harmony with fills, a la Sonny Rollins ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZazZYmjOOF0 ... or Bach unaccompanied string suites. This is just as important in the solos, which would work better being more chord-based rather than strictly linear. The bass has to contribute more to this, too, making the changes very clear. Perhaps as a result of the recording, the drums sound heavy-handed and the drum fills ragged, and the bass is boomy and kind of ponderous. I think Equinox and All of Me would benefit from being faster. Your timing is good and the group as a whole is pretty cohesive, although I never feel the momentum of a real groove. For example, The Girl from Ipanema doesn't "fly" as a bossa should. Good luck! And thanks for sharing. Cheers, Jer |
