Another album in which Barbara makes an important contribution is Kaleidoscope of Rainbows by Neil Ardley, recently re-issued on the Dusk Fire label. She solos on 'Rainbow 4' and it's a great album throughout.

Last year I picked up a very clean copy of Kaleidoscope in that little record shop in Hanway street, which is still there, although with less Jazz -- lot of obscure Coltrane LPs though.

My problem has been that I have only discovered this "family" of Ardley, Thompson, 2 Carrs and a Rendell, fairly recently, and most of my acquisitions would have been impossible outside of London - I don't buy Records off the internet - personal bias

Some nice shots there, although she looks like she has you in her sights in number 3 with the flute -- you weren't using flash were you???

I have always loved this picture of her from the self-titled album

This album cover (back and front) I think says it all. A blonde on a Harley, with a Sax!

Curiously that is an Alto she has slung across her back -- probably the sax she plays least -- perhaps the Tenor was too big to do that with

I'm pretty sure I didn't, but used Kodak's then recently introduced VR 1000 film. There were lots of spots so I'd sufficient available light. If I'd used flash she would've those typical red eyes especially on this flute picture (I didn't manipulate the scans).

Funny finding this thread as I picked up a copy of Barbara's 'Thompson's Tangos' just over a week ago. An interesting album that I enjoy more with each playing.
I'll certainly be seeking out more in the future.

Barbara Thompson

I last saw Paraphernalia in the latter half of 2005 at the Jagger Centre in Dartford (Kent). Thompson spent most of the gig playing alto, in fact she didn't even have a tenor onstage.

The only other thing she played was some flute. She's one of only two people I've heard who seem to make flute really work in a jazz context – Joe Farrell was the other.

Barbara Thompson's hugely underappreciated for some reason – as a musician and composer.

Thanks Tenorman for this heads up, the great British (London) gigs are now coming thick and fast as there's also a Mike Osborne tribute with Skid, Tracey, Westie, et al at the 100 Club on 3 April and the Mike Garrick sextet birthday reunion gig at Pizz Express Dean Street, on 7 May.

I picked up a copy of the 'Paraphernalia - Live In Concert' 2LP album a while back and I have to say it's a great, great set - a nice variety of material performed by a top-notch band.

This thread really needs some additional air time.

I need to update my album list.

Such a pity that Barbara is not gigging in the UK, only in Europe

One of the top musicians / composers in the UK

Agreed! And although mentioned elsewhere I thought it timely to mention again that Barbara appears on the newly reissued (for the first time in 40 years and for the first time on CD) "A Symphony of Amaranths" by Neil Ardley. Highly recommended.
