Hi everyone, I hope this doesn't seem like self-indulgent spam, but some of you might be interested in my new blog in which I interview well-known jazz musicians about their practice routines. So far I have interviews with Antonio Sanchez, Janek Gwizdala and Scott Amendola, and a few other snippets about other musicians. I have a few more interviews lined up so keep an eye on it!
I am always looking for new contributors so if anyone out there knows someone or is interested, let me know. http://itsgoodpractice.wordpress.com/

Very helpful
Thanks for posting this up. I'm sure there is something in here for everybody, but personally, as a novice trying to improve, these words of wisdom really help. My practice routine is getting better all the time. Your blog will help focus my thinking and improve my playing.

Thank you posting the link. I appreciate the insight of the musicians. Especially the segment from Eric Dolphy's parents.
The Q&A with Scott Amendola was really interesting but I would love to hear a more in depth answer/explanation to the last question. "Do you have any words of advice for anyone who is trying to practice more productively and become a better musician? FOCUS! That means, whatever you are truly interested in musically, work on that. Work on technique. HAVE A CONCEPT! I meet loads of drummers that don’t have a concept around technique and it has clearly set them back, in some cases, years. It is VITAL! We do need to think about what were doing and work on that so we can get to the place of getting lost in the music. Good habits make the music go WAY deeper."

Thanks for sharing this, I think I may become a regular reader. As a full time gigging musician, the P word is one that always worries me. People ask me what I practice and I say...I don't. And the reason is that I have no idea what to practice!
So I'm going to start a new thread and get people's answers to the 'what do you practice' question. |
