James Carter

Was at the NYC Jazz Festival Saturday night at Poisson Rouge(formally known as the Village Gate)and James Carter tore the roof off that place !!.I have never seen nothing like it.He played the Sopprano and Tenor although he is equally as great with Alto and Barritone and a number of other wind instruments. His sidemen were playing Hammond B3 and Duums just a 3 pc organ trio.I have 14 of his albums of which 3 are live and I was not prepared for what I saw on Saturday. Also saw Rudresh Mahathappa and they were great !!..Earlier in the evening I was at the Jazz Standard to see the great Dr.Lonnie Smith always a great show !!!
I know James Carter is known for being a "show-off" by I don't see it that way I believe he is a great "showman"who will one day go down as being one of the greatest sax players ever !!

If he had his standard Hammond player Gerard Gibbs, then I bet it was a show!!

Yes it was Gerard Gibbs on the B3 and Leonard King Jr on Drums.Carter paused at one point and lowered his tenor, gave it a funny look, then "bitch slapped"it as if to say I rule you !!!

James Carter has been one of my absolute favorites for years. I too have been perplexed by the constant criticism leveled at him. Yes, he definitely is a showman, and yes, in his younger days he did sometimes throw everything but the kitchen sink at you with seemingly every solo, but would complacency be better? He has that deep Coleman Hawkins sound on the horn that apparently has fallen out of favor, but for me defines the saxophone at it's best. One of the best live events I ever saw was Mr. Carter and the incomparable David Murray at Yoshi's in Oakland some years back. That was saxophone heaven for me!

He has a recognizable sound; is a brilliant multi-instrumentalist; plays with fiery energy--I like him too.

Me three! Acutally I only caught the tail end of Carter's set, but saw him sit in with Gregory Porter.

Another fan here. Saw him play once and he was fantastic - A Real Quietstorm is an album I keep coming back to.

Check out this thread from couple years back.I agree with many of the contributors to the thread. To many haters in this world.JC has been one of the top saxaphonists and extroadinary live talent in the last 2 decades and IMHO one of the all time greats. If I could play like him I would play those long crazy jams too. When electric guitarists do it its called mastery why not the same here. And if you do not believe he can play songs with soul and feeling I suggest you get some of his recordings and listen.
