Bobby Jones - Hill Country Suite

save, spun this vinyl this evening and thought of your sax-trio thread. This another one that's well off the beaten path... but interesting.

Bobby Jones (ts, clarinet)/George Mraz (b)/Freddie Waits (d)

There's something almost Jimmy Giuffre-ish (in his folky phase) about this recording -- especially when Jones picks up his clarinet (on just one song). But I like the whole dusty, pared-down vibe that Jones gets here very much. The photo on the album cover gets at it. This isn't late-night city jazz. It's country-jazz, sorta.

John Coltrane's "Chasin the Trane" from "Live at the Village Vanguard" is a sax trio performance, albeit coupled with two other live tracks.

Charlie Haden's "The Montreal Tapes," with Joe Henderson and Al Foster. I appreciate this one more and more over time.

What is the sound quality like on this one? Good? subpar? etc?

The sound quality is pretty good. It was in the can for over a decade before being released, and I've never exactly figured out why. Although billed under Haden's name, as it was recorded at a series of tribute concerts to Haden, the spotlight is mainly on Henderson.

Very nice. That makes it look like it might be a good companion sitting next to Henderson's State of the Tenor album on my shelf. I'd still like, and hope, to find a reasonably priced copy The Standard Joe by Joe Henderson. Henderson with Rufus Reid and Al Foster.

Don't forget Sonny Rollins' Way Out West. Look for the 20-bit K2 remaster if you can. I like it a little better than the Vanguard and Freedom Suite.

Further out, there's Ornette Coleman at the Golden Circle (Blue Note RVGs).

Check out Karl Densen's "Chunky Pecan Pie." Its a powerful session with Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland.
It seems to be a one off album. I do not care for any of his later "Tiny Universe" recordings.

I was looking for Al Foster stuff on emusic yesterday. Doublechecking just now, I see that they have "The Standard Joe" available for download, if you're just interested in hearing it. I need to pick up that "State of the Tenor."

I used to own this on vinyl, and have to agree with you Hutch. Think I still have a tape somewhere containing 'Bringing In The Sheep'

Most are Sax-Bass duo, but a few are trio. Superb.

DKV Trio - for a hundred bucks, hear them explode - Live, Past and Present (7 CD's from 2008 through the end of 2011)
The band is Hamid Drake, Kent Kessler and Ken Vandermark. If you want to spend twenty bucks get 2 CD set Live in Wels and Chicago recorded in 1998

Clusone Trio - with cello in place of bass: Michael Moore (reeds), Ernst Reijseger (cello) and Han Bennink (drums). Many great records but "I An An Indian" is my personal favorite.

Borgmann-Morris-Charles - find the silkheart disc - Last Concert - hear the *great* Denis Charles at his best right near the end

Parker-Guy-Lytton: At The Vortex 1996

Parker-Edwards-Sanders: The Two Seasons (2 CD's) 1999

Anderson-Parker-Drake: Blue Winter (2 CD's) 2004 Eremite

many more but these ones are keepers

Steve Lehman Trio - "Dialect Fluorescent"

Mark Turner, Jeff Ballard, Larry Grenadier - "Fly"

I just came back to check for more suggestions and want to thank everyone for their input. I've picked up some Lee Kontiz, Joe Lavano, Kenny Garrett, J.D. Allen and listening and learned from all.
