On Monday Oct 29th I will post something that may explain some things. Iv'e known about it for awhile and it's about time jazz fans knew if they don't already. Assuming it is true.

Why? I even wondered why you were going to wait until Monday if you, in fact, do know something. (It almost sounded like you were going to hold a press conference.) Do you actually have valid information or is it just more rumor and speculation?

It's that time of year again!
Ken Borgers’ JazzKnob.org presents “The Sounds of the Season” - commercial free - from noon Monday, December 24th through Christmas Day, Tuesday, December 25th at midnight. The 36-hour presentation will be highlighted by a reading of the classic “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” by the late L.A. jazz radio personality, Chuck Niles. There will be six opportunities to hear the Niles narrative: noon and 6 PM, December 24th; and December 25th at midnight, 6 AM, noon and 6 PM. All times are P.S.T.
These are a few of the seasonal favorites to be heard: Sleigh Ride – John Pizzarelli England’s Carol - Modern Jazz Quartet Here Comes Santa Claus - Ramsey Lewis Trio Snowfall - Ahmad Jamal Let it Snow - Diana Krall Happy Holidaze! GClaus |

KKJZ still out of touch
Last week, I read that January 16th would be the 75th Anniversary of Benny Goodman's famous Carnegie Hall concert. So, I tuned in to KJAZZ (something I almost never do anymore) to see if they might announce it and play some of that classic music. Did they? What do you think? Of course not! I also checked their playlist for that day just to make sure that I hadn't missed something.
The 75th anniversary of one of the most important events in the history of jazz and KJAZZ didn't even acknowledge it. That is beyond shameful. |

Stop hoping for KKJZ to do anything relevant to jazz history. They're clueless.

KKJZ mgt. thinks that the way to go and keep the station financially viable is to play the stuff they are playing. They could be right. The most recent fund drive was a success. The next one is in Feb. or March. WBGO is a good station, all things considered. KSDS (San Diego City College) is too sleepy for my tastes. I want to check out KCSM (San Mateo) and the Denver station. Anyone know about them? One of my main interests now are new artists who may be a little edgy jazz-wise. Forget about that when it comes to KKJZ. One last thought: if KKJZ ever returns to being a quality JAZZ station, I have a feeling it may be too late. Many Jazz fans have stopped listening. I think they may be forever turned off by the station. Like Alan P, I occasionally check out the KKJZ play list. But I don't mourn or get angry. There are just too many other Jazz options out here to be concerned with a station that wants to be, and indeed has become, THE WAVE 2013, i.e. jazz lite, vocal and instrumental pop music, adult contemporary Let's face the facts folks, as a Jazz station KKJZ is dead and has been for some time. I don't waste my time or money on it. |

Point of clarification: By the WAVE 2013 I didn't mean that they sound like the WAVE. I don't know what the WAVE sounds like today. In a clumsy way of stating it, what I meant was that if the WAVE were to go back to its old smooth jazz format from a few years ago before it stopped calling itself a smooth jazz station, it would probably sound like KKJZ, or very close to it, today.
Yes, I like Bob Parlocha, too. A classy guy who knows the music. But he is not enough to make me want to listen again. I believe that the playing of his show is a sop thrown to the hard core jazz fans. |
