Maybe this is overly optimistic of me, but I think the assertion,

"But if audiences start to believe that not even live is live any more, gig attendance could find itself plunging down the same black hole as the rest of the music business"

might actually be false for benefit of music. It might be possible to leverage gig attendance for smaller, less commercial shows precisely BECAUSE major pop stars lip-sync. Might convince people to check out other stuff.

She sang to a recorded track. She didn't slur it beyond recognition or hold the money note to death, but she couldn't resist giving it the pop treatment. Just sing the damn tune straight - as written. It's an anthem for chrissakes. It ain't jazz.

Lip syncing, by a pop singer? I'm shocked I tell you, shocked...

Anyhow, I think it would have been more appropriate to sing it live. But pre- recording and lip syncing narrows the likelihood of a screwup, so I can understand it.

Otoh if the Marine Band can tough out the elements and the pressure of live performance, so should she. [Maybe they'll get real pros to sing the Anthem in the future? ...Ha!]

It's another sign of the dumbing down of America, lowering the bar of professionalism and acceptance in the entertainment world. I saw it happening as far back as the '60s.

C'mon, man.. that's one of those farce shred videos... you knew that, right? In reality, Yo-Yo and Itzhak did bow-sync that day because they said their instruments could not stay in tune in that weather, and that the strings would break.

Anyway, my point was going to be that... actually, I don't know what my point is with that... except that it happens all the time now in the realm of pop/commercial music. It did not surprise me at all when I read about it in the New York Post.

No, I heard about the bow-syncing. But I thought, with that YouTube clip, it was them trying to tune up first. It did go on for a long time tho....

Butting in, I am, but then I like many Bogart films (but not all 47 of them) as you may deduce from my board name.

I've never been over-enamoured of messing with anthems, but then maybe what I think about Beyoncé's rendition don't amount to a hill of beans, in this crazy world.

Agreed. Talking about Bogie films is a LOT more interesting than anything Beyoncé did at the president's inauguration.

Along with "Casablanca," my favorite Bogart movie is probably...

Nothing to do with the original thread. But what the heck.

'Lekker belangrijk' was a comment someone had over here to this news item, which would literally translate as 'tastely important'. It is kind of an expression in our language and means something like 'as if we care' or 'who cares'.
What really made me laugh was the comment in total:
'Who cares, our government has been doing it for years.'
