Exactly. I haven't listened to him in a few years, but this is one reason why I try to listen to Rhonda Hamilton of WBGO as often as I can. Lots of facts and trivia about the artists and music. A case in point being the show yesterday, his birthday, when things were shared about Juan Tizol. All I knew about him was that he was Puerto Rican, was in the Ellington band and that he wrote "Caravan." She mentioned more tidbits about him and played more of his music. Her show is entertaining and educational, like Parlocha's program. With WBGO I just don't have to endure Spyro Gyra, Kenny G and Steve Tyrell to hear the real deal only in the wee small hours of the morning.

One good thing KKJZ is doing is supporting the existence of jazz in the secondary schools through its sponsorship of an upcoming series of performances by local school bands. It called Save Our Jazz. Props for that. But much of the music on the station still sucks. Big time.

Would sure nice to have the old KLON back, Chuck ,Sam, James Janisse and Leroy Downs were great to listen to. I used to listen all day but now the only time it sounds anything like like a jazz station is when jazz on the Latin side and Bob Parlocha are on. Like Chuck Cecil also. The last pledge drive was a success but I wonder if it had more to do with the stuff they were giving away. They sounded more like a Jazz station during the drive. Its seems like a bait and switch, they brought out some good stuff during the drive and put it back in the closet when the drive ended. Found a couple of other stations to listen to at home WDNA in Florida and KMHD in Portland both have some good shows.

Found another Jazz station. Listening at night they are automated overnight so no back announcing or info on the music. I have not heard any of the Jocks yet. But what I have heard sounds much better than KKJZ even without announcers.

Makes one wonder that if you've "been waiting a long time for someone, anyone, to finally point this out!", why you didn't do it yourself.

It's true, and obvious, that K-JAZZ (KKJZ) isn't the same station when they're having a pledge drive. One of the reasons, of course, is that they're playing a lot of good stuff from the CDs and iPods they're offering as incentives to call in and pledge. But something else that's maybe MORE significant is that, during a pledge drive, I noticed that they don't seem to play all those pop and smooth jazz recordings, i.e., Earl Klugh, Chuck Mangione, Spryo Gyra, Dave Koz, etc. that are usually heard hour after hour, day after day on the station.

Something else different about a K-JAZZ pledge drive: In order to get listeners interested in pledging, the deejays actually talk about the artists and the recordings and even mention sidemen, something that is NEVER done during the regular broadcasts. Strange as it is, K-JAZZ plays better music and is a more interesting station during a pledge drive than any other time. The rest of the time, it's just boring and monotonous.

Jazzdude, you asked if anyone knows about KCSM (San Mateo). Yes, I listen to them quite a bit. It's a pretty good station, especially on Saturdays with Sonny Buxton and Dick Conte. (And I've never heard them play a David Benoit recording!) KCSM is in the middle of a pledge drive now and, musically, it doesn't seem to be any different from their regular programs. Listening to the pledge drive on KCSM, there was something that struck me: I was amazed at how many people called in with pledges who did NOT take a thank-you gift. They just wanted to support the station.

I wonder how successful a K-JAZZ pledge drive would be without all the gifts and sweepstakes.

Do not want to get my hopes up but I am wondering if something is going on at the station. Look at the playlist for 2/11/13 and it looks like they actually played more real jazz than they have been playing and possibly less of those annoying vocals. Saw Miles, Eddie Harris, Shelly Mann, Oscar Peterson, Willie Bobo, MJQ,Ahamad Jamal, Stanley Turrentine, Stan Kenton Mcoy Tyner, Freddy Hubbard, Charlie Parker and others. Look at the playlist and let me know what you think.
