Jimmy Smith – Angel Eyes: Ballads & Slow Jams

Don't know why it's on my playlist as it's all pretty mediocre stuff really - must have been drifting off to sleep at the time I guess

Ramsey Lewis – Songs from the Heart:
Ramsey Plays Ramsey

Despite what the sleeve cover might suggest, this is a very good album and Ramsey really (could even say rarely?) shows the not inconsiderable breadth of his serious jazz chops

No, I don't think it's ever been out on CD. I have it on an LP that was put out by PAUSA here in the USA, licensed from MPS. Found it on ebay a few years back.

Scofield sounds very good. But he's in a much more traditional, Jim Hall-ish mode on this record. He still hadn't developed the very personal, distinctive sound that he has now. Have you ever heard Scofield's record Live (Enja, 1977)? If so, Scofield's sound on Four Keys is similar to that one.

BTW: I think Mosaic should issue all of Solal's MPS recordings in a box. I don't know how viable it would be commerically (probably not at all viable), but all of his MPS LPs -- including this one -- are terrific. I think only one of them was briefly available on CD, Suite for Trio (1978, with NHØP and Daniel Humair). If you see it, GET IT!

Tonight I've been playing:

Chick Corea & Gary Burton - Crystal Silence

My wife and I saw Chick & Gary perform on Saturday night at the Ferst Center on the Georgia Tech campus. Really enjoyed the concert.
