double-bass-centric, gloomy, melancholy, passionate (but not exaggerated) bluesy jazz
the kind you might find walking into a dimly lit club with a few shady characters.
a focus on the upright bass, a bit of swing in the blues, and perhaps some silky percussion. this music would be great for how i've been feeling but i honestly can't find a single instance of it anywhere. i would be forever indebted to one if one could point me in the right direction. |

Just listened to Michael Lington's version of 'Harlem Nocturne'.

Twelves Trio -- Here Comes the Woodman . . .
Miles Davis -- Ascenseur Pour l'Échafaud [not bass-centric, but it's what you are looking for] John Coltrane -- title track to Ole |

iillii, Welcome to the board. I agree with Jeff and DoN:
MINGUS. Where first? Given your interest: Blues & Roots (Atlantic Records): ![]() And then there's his masterpiece "Haitian Fight Song" on The Clown ![]() Then there's William Parker -- yes, he (often but not always) leads these avant-garde free jazz bands that can really play "out", but they are rooted in blues. For passionate & bluesy, try "Sun" from his O'Neal's Porch; for mellow and melancholy, try Luc's Lantern

wow- thanks guys.
i started with mingus as recommended by the first couple posters, and it was definitely as close as i'd gotten but i didn't know where to start. i listened to Moanin' on Blues & Roots and it blew my mind- though it got a bit too quick and drifty as it progressed for the specific feeling i was trying to encapsulate, it is now one of my favorite songs of all time. Haitian Fight Song i know i would enjoy- but the trumpet is an instrument that's a bit too pronounced for what i'm going for. i thought michael lington's harlem nocturne was a bit too 70's-ey superficial; and def. too bright for what i was looking for. i love miles davis, and i thought Ascenseur Pour l'Échafaud was indeed what i was looking for- it actually had the exact mood of bass i was looking for. and Coltrane's Ole pulled me in at the start, but lost me in the feel with the piano and sax; i'm sure i could enjoy it if i weren't looking for something more specific... the flute was beautiful though. william parker's "sun" was alright for me, but i really had trouble enjoying luc's lantern- i think i just find myself far more attracted much darker atmospheres, william parker feels a little too neutral for me. thanks a lot, guys. now i'm off to listen to Mingus's "Moanin'" again. |
