Eberhard Weber: Resume

I'll be the first to admit I had some reservations about this how this album was put together, what with taking live solo pieces taped between sets at various shows, and then having music added to those solos later - the possibility of having a hodge pod of bits and pieces seemed like a real danger to me.

After recieving and playing the album over the past couple of days, I realize now I needn't have worried - this is wonderful stuff. I was happy to hear, via John's interview with him, that he already has another album in the can. I'll be there for that one as well.

Just a point of clarification: these were not solos taped between sets; they were live solo performances, between two songs; Garbarek often uses that device: give one guy in the band a solo between two songs, so there's a beginning context and an ending context, but then it's up to the soloist to find his/her way to from point a to point b, so to speak.

Glad you're liking it, though; Eberhard is so meticulous about his choices (hell, he's only released 13 albums as a leader in nearly 40 years), so I've come to trust that when he does release an album, it's going to be well worth checking out.

Sean Moran Small Elephant Band - "Tusk"
-With Moran on acoustic nylon string guitars, plus Harris Eisenstadt on drums, Chris Dingman on vibes, Michael McGinnis on clarinet and bass clarinet, and Reuben Radding on bass. Music that cuts at strange angles, yet oddly beautiful. Moran's use of the nylon strings brings the album up a notch. Fans of Eisenstadt and Dingman will go away happy. Worth noting that Moran is a member of the Four Bags quartet, along with Jacob Garchik.

There's no mention of Marcus Gilmore or Jen Shyu in the write up on the Pi website so i assume they're not involved. I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand their hugely original flavours were a huge part of making the last 3 Five Elements albums what they were. On the other hand i'm excited to see where Coleman is going next. The next two months are going to be a long wait.

Thanks for clarifying John, as I had that wrong. I know he hasn't had many releases as a leader (I have them all and love 'em) so it's makes Resume that much more special, especially in light of his current health issues.

Wow, a duet album? That could be really something. One of my favorite groupings is the piano/sax duet. And with Lloyd and Moran, could be great.

The write-up on Pi is great; looks like a very promising album. Unfortunately his last 3 albums with Jen Shyu just didn't do it for for me, so really looking forward to this one.

Yelena Eckemoff: Glass Song

Had this one preordered for some time now - just came in the mail today.

My review of Mark Lockheart's Ellington in Anticipation, today at All About Jazz.

Lockheart, an alum of the groundbreaking large ensemble '80s collective Loose Tubes (thankfully documented recently in an ongoing series of live recordings including Sad Afrika), has been on a roll since he released Moving Air in 2005, and Ellington in Anticipation continues the winning streak.

An Ellington tribute, yes, but far from conventional, as Lockheart - working with, amongst others, fellow Polar Bears Seb Rochford (drums) and Tom Herbert (bass), alongside altoist/flautist Finn Peters, clarinetist James Allsopp and pianist Liam Noble - twists, turns and skews some of Ellington's more well-known tunes (either written by the Duke or long associated with him), as well as delivering a handful of originals. The result is an album that, while not stylistically similar, is conceptually in the same ballpark as trumpeter Dave Douglas' mid-to-late '90s tributes to Booker Little (In Our Lifetime, Wayne Shorter (Stargazer and Mary Lou Williams (Soul on Soul) and comes equally recommended.
