What's included in Dexter Gordon Prestige Box Set?

Hi everyone,

Trying to beef up my Dexter Gordon collection, but as you all know, there are TONS of releases out there.
What I'm trying to find out is: what album material is covered on the set?
When you look at a Mosaic box set, it will say (on their site), "tracks originally released as album...."

I've found reviews aplenty for the set, and I'll purchase it, I just don't want to double-buy anything.

Thanks in advance!

Since it is called the Complete PRESTIGE recordings, you can rest assured that it includes all of his Prestige sides PLUS a couple of posthumously released live dates with Gene Ammons, I think. The quickest (not necessarily the least expensive) way to acquire the best Dexter would be to acquire the numerous boxed sets out there. FWIW, for me, the Prestige stuff, while good, is not his best.

I have all of those sets with the exception of the Blue Note.
I have the blue note CDs separately.

In the first post you said you DIDN'T have the Prestige set. What's goin' on?

Ordered it from amazon after reading allmusic review.

So, "have" is relative...for now.

What I really meant is "why the sudden urgency to collect every note ever recorded by Dexter Gordon"?

For me, slow and methodical worked best. That way you'll digest the music before moving on to the next "thing".

Oh, I'm not buying it all now; just compiling a wish list so I'm ready if/ when I decide to add more.

That's why I've been looking into and asking for help about the live stuff; there's so much out there. I don't want to buy one now and then another a few months later only to find there's doubles.

I was beginning to think that you recently came into a boatload of cash! There is an awful lot out there, but the situation you've just described is pretty much every jazz fan's dilemma -- buying the same stuff over and over again There's really no foolproof way to avoid it.

So, knowing my taste in types of jazz (most bop like Gordon and early Coltrane); would Andrew Hill be too "out there" for me?
