Donald Byrd: 1932-2013

I'm very sad to say that it's being reported that Donald Byrd has passed away at the age of 80. Although the details are currently hazy, Byrd's nephew, Alex Bugnon, has confirmed Byrd's passing.

Byrd has been one of my favorite trumpeters for years. His Blue Note albums are remarkably consistent and his playing as a sideman enlivens many albums. I can't really say much other than thank you, Dr. Byrd, for all of the music.

I am sorry to hear this news, if it is fact true. Just a week ago last Sunday, WKCR in NYC did a five-hour profile on Donald Byrd, focusing on his prolific years of 1955 - 1967. Five hours of pure bliss. What a beautiful trumpet player.

My feeling exactly. So many great works as a leader (Byrd in Hand, Byrd in Flight, Fuego, Free Form, Slow Drag) and as a sideman (my favorite: Dexter Gordon's One Flight Up). But my favorite remains Electric Byrd. I often used to listen to "Essence" and "Xibaba" late at night, as some last songs before going to sleep. Prayers and blessings.

Donald Byrd R.I.P.

I find it disturbing that a true music giant died last week and only 10 members have posted on him, (over in the "general music discussion" thread no less) on a so called "jazz" bulletin board. Shame on us. There have been precious few musicians who have contributed so much creativity over such a long period. He was 80.

Two threads merged

Pictures from the William Caxton collection

I don't have anything very recent by him, but quite a lot from 60s 70s

Thank you for the music
