Dr Donald Byrd Tribute

What a wonderful musician, he played with everyone and was a lovely human being. At Global City we are fortunate to have Gigi Brooks as a host and she did a great job last week as a tribute with interviews with guys that new him. If you missed the show its on podcast at www.globalcityradio.com.

Another great Jazz name leaves us.

Very, very sad news.

A great figure in the history of improvised music. The fact that for thirty years he seemed never satisfied with what he had achieved so far, might seem weakness to some: I think it is a sign of his conscientious quest for fresh music, for music of impact and power. And the point is that the music he left for something new - the cool. Miles-influenced style, the hotter post-bop in the band with Pepper, the striking gospel feel with virtuosity of 1963, the departure for Paris to develop his arranging skills (even) further, his long chart "Tanya" with Dexter there, his beautifully arranged soul-and-funk influenced band with Sonny Redd (and Mobley), the first experimentations with two guitars and the more meaningful and tuneful electric grooves than Miles' ....... they were all outstanding tracks in their own right, not imitations or space-fillers.

He was one of those whose solos were both considered and immediate, deeply felt but well constructed. And as a teacher too he was inspirational.
