My New York/Santa Cruz Jazz Fantasy

One of my little fantasies was to go to New York for a whole month and then go out to a jazz show every night.

Well, my wife wasn't so on board with that! But my vision persisted.

And then the next best thing came along, which actually may be a little better.

My little, tiny, but very cool town, Santa Cruz, has a great jazz Club called the Kuumbwa Jazz Center. A great room with great sound. We get standing room only shows all the time at the 200 person capacity venue (compared to 123 int eh Village Vanguard)

And in the next three months, most of my current favorite jazz musicians will be playing there. When it rains it pours!

Joe Lovano - Jan 28 (Amazing Show!)

Kurt Rosenwinkel - Feb 18

Chris Potter - Feb 25

Donny McCaslin - March 4

Vijay Iyer - March 16

Allison Miler - April 11

Anat Cohen - April 22

Chick Corea - April 24

Bad Plus - April 29

And those are just my favorites. Additionally, appearing are:

Allen Toussaint - Feb 11

Robben Ford - Feb 22

Ladysmith Back Mambazo - March 6 (yeah, not exactly jazz..)

Kyle Eastwood - March 11

Brubeck Brothers - March 25

So by my calculation there is more jazz in Santa Cruz (by total population, which is just 60,000) than anywhere else on earth.

So take that, NYC!

Cheers, Robert

P.S. If you're in the area, come to some of these shows.

That is an awesome lineup, and a great club I'm sure. I wouldn't mind being in Santa Cruz right now, myself, to tell you the truth.

If you can ever make it to the Village Vanguard you will enjoy the ambiance, sound, reverence and history of the music there as well. It is like no other jazz club in the world.

Sounds like a great club, robmid!

Wish we had something like that here in Atlanta.

I'll bet they somehow found out about your fantasy and decided to come honour the real fan.
Have fun, robmid!

I've been to the Vanguard a few times, tpt1, and I really love it. No, there is nothing like it, I agree. I've seen some great shows there. I wish it were around the block, but Kuumbwa is, so I'm lucky.

Cheers, Robert

Yeah Page, it's as if the Universe heard my wish and responded! Happens sometimes.

Y'know, I'm not sure why Kuumbwa is getting so many stellar acts. Even Yoshi's in both Oakland and San Francisco are not getting as many great artists. They're also selling out to pop music. Lee Dewyze - American Idol Winner. Sheez!

Cheers, Robert

Come up here and I'll take you to a show! Seriously! And we could have a long talk about Bobby Hutcherson's music while we were at it.

Cheers, Robert

The April 24 Corea date is not yet up on his website. Which group is that? Is it the new quintet called "Vigil"?:

Yes. He's on the Kuumbwa schedule. He's also playing at Yoshi's the previous week, I think.

From your post, I know that he's on the Kuumbwa schedule. I was just saying that the date is not on the tour schedule on his website, and because of that, was not sure which band would be playing in Santa Cruz.

So let's begin again. Sorry for the confusion. Which band is it?
