Next: Wynton Kelly and Sonny Clark Suggestions

HI everyone,

You've all been a huge help in making my long-term wishlist as I beef up my collection.

In my other post, I asked for suggestions of Andrew Hill titles. I settled on Black Fire & Grass Roots (to add to my list for the time being).

Now - I'm a fan of Wyton Kelly and Sonny Clark's work.

I have the Complete Sonny Clark Trio Recording as well as his big releases Cool Struttin, Dial S for Sonny, Leapin and Lopin and Sonny's Crib.

Anything else of his I should check out?

I have the following Wynton Kelly:
1) Someday My Prince Will Come
2) Kelly Great

Any thoughts for him?

Thanks in advance!

You've come to the right place for suggestions. These guys know their stuff...

For Sonny Clark...

- His album, Leapin' and Lopin', and work as a sideman (Dexter Gordon stuff on Blue Note, etc.); I think my favorite one with Clark as a leader is the trio album on Blue Note

For Wynton Kelly...

- I second the albums already mentioned, but also check out his side work with Miles (particularly the Live at the Blackhawk set, Someday My Prince will Come, and Live in Stockholm 1960) and Hank Mobley (especially, Soul Station, Roll Call, and the two 'Workout' albums)

Hope that helps

Three sideman dates that I enjoy:

Tina Brooks - Minor Move, with Sonny Clark.

Sonny Red - Out of the Blue, with Wynton Kelly.

Sonny Rollins - Vol. 1, with Wynton Kelly.
