I'm really looking forward to this. The music heard in the background is interesting... shades of mid-nineties albums like Paint The World and Time Warp... there was bass moment that really had a Bunny Brunel circa Tap Step flavour for me...

There's just something about a Corea release of this sort that makes me feel like a kid looking forward to christmas again. I know he's a soft target; say what you want about his desire to communicate with the audience and make them feel something but it's an approach that has successfully connected with me.

There's just something about a Corea release of this sort that makes me feel like a kid looking forward to christmas again. He seems to have a unique ability to write fresh and exciting music, even at this stage of the game. Personally, I thought that his band "Origin" was one of the best working bands in jazz during the late 90s/early 00s.

What i've heard of Origin is awesome (Change and the Live at the Blue Note CD). Recent albums like Hot House, Further Explorations and The Continents are up there with the best work he's ever done in my opinion.

He definitely has not rested on his laurels. Amazingly, his work still flies under the radar of most, yet he receives loads of venom over his involvement with Scientology. Too bad. I consider him an American treasure.

I saw Chick with Gary Burton last month. A great show.

Two of his records ALWAYS make my ever-evolving desert-island list: Now He Sings, Now He Sobs and Return to Forever.

He's a giant in my book.

I've always been mystified by the nay-sayers. It's always seemed to me that he was being true to himself, regardless of whether his music was "accessible to ordinary folks" -- or not. He always sounds like himself and nobody else. Isn't that what jazz is all about?

My favorite one is Trio Music Live In Europe.He`s one of the first jazz musicians I listened to.I admit I have`nt heard much of his recent stuff.Also,Return To Forever and Light As A Feather rate highly with me

That box set is pretty reasonably priced for 6 CDs and it's good to know there's no double up with the single CD. It's on the wishlist for now.

'flies under the radar' is an apt way to put it... it's weird how the albums of someone so high profile seem to get relatively little attention. I thought The Continents was a monumental album, one of the best of his entire career (YMMV) but i've seen very little coverage or comment on it.

I think factors external to the music do come into play. I fell in love with Corea's music before i discovered bulletin boards and blogs and even before i knew he was a scientologist. I think a lot of listeners encounter the negativity before they have a chance to make up their own mind. Not saying that it's not possible to dislike his music purely based on the music, but i'm sure that perceptions can be coloured (mine own do, of course, at times).

Anyway, so it goes

I agree about Continents -- a really solid recording.

Another box to watch out for (it may be OOP) is a Japanese only release called "Five Trios". A disc each for 5 different trios, plus a 6th disc with leftovers from most (if not all) of the five. I recommend this highly, but at this point, it may not come cheap. I believe I got it from Abstract Logix when it was first released (about 5 or 6 years ago). My only quibble with Chick is that too many of his releases are Japanese only, and as a result, are way more expensive than they need to be.

I love chick. I have a ton of his albums (I think around 80) and my favorite electrik band recording is "Inside Out."


I find it to be very creative. Also, I love the album he did with Bela Fleck
