James P. Johnson - Giants of Jazz (Time-Life LP set)

Finally digitized these LPs, so I can listen at work. I have nearly all of the Time-Life "Giants of Jazz" boxes, and I think the James P. set is one of the best.

Going to digitize the Bunny Berigan set next.

Perhaps my favorite Hutcherson record. Certainly one of his very best.

It´s a shame: One of the greatest piano players - but only a few recordings available. Especially his early dates from the Fifities e.g. "Rare but well done" are rare, indeed!

I agree 100%. Rowles is an underappreciated master. I first heard his piano playing on this record:

Ben Webster - At the Renaissance

During his solo on "Georgia on My Mind," Rowles plays an Ellington-like dissonant chord -- and that one chord knocked me out. I said to myself, "Who is THAT?!?!" Been a fan ever since.

Stan Getz/Jimmy Rowles: The Peacocks

blue's mention of Rowles encouraged me to get this one out and give it a spin. For me, Getz could do no wrong, so the addition of Rowles just makes this one all the better.
