Introducing myself and my jazz poster collection

Hi all,

My name is William, and I grew up playing saxophone in Jacksonville, FL. Since 1980 every year (with two exceptions) there is a huge jazz festival. Since I started playing saxophone around the age of 12, I've always tried to go to the festival to be introduced to all sorts of jazz artists.

Every year, an official poster is made for the festival. I only started collecting the posters about five years ago, but now have most of them. While I'm in the process of searching for the hardest to find posters from the festival, I am also searching out the original artists from each of the festivals, and try to get their autographs on the posters from the years they performed. It's been a great hobby, and meeting the artists usually makes for some awesome stories.

Here's what I have already:
2011 (Signed by 21 artists - most notably Boney James, David Sanborn, Doug Carn, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, and Nester Torres)

2010 (Signed by 16 artists - Chris Botti, Irvin Mayfield, Ronnie Laws, Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith, Tom Browne, and Wayne Henderson among them)

(Just a stock photo of the poster there)

2010 Alternate - This was a submission by a local artist that was not selected to be the official poster, but knowing Chris Botti was headlining that year, I got in touch with the artist, and he printed one for me. I had both big trumpeters this year, Chris Botti and Irvin Mayfield autograph it for me. Mayfield said he liked this one better than the official one. (He may be slightly biased)

(Another stock photo of the poster)

2009 (Signed by 8 artists - like Chris Botti, Boney James, Von Barlow, and Mindi Abair)

2008 (Signed by Dave Koz and John Pizzarelli)

2007 (Signed by Al Jarreau, Chris Botti, Richard Elliot, Rick Braun, and Von Barlow)

2006 (Signed by everyone from The Bluecat Express, Gary Starling, Herboe Hancock, and Von Barlow)

2005 - Probably my favorite poster (Signed by Chris Botti, David Sanborn, Gary Starling, George Duke, Mindi Abair, Peter White, Richard Elliot, and Rick Braun)

2004 (Signed by Dot Wilder)

2003 (Signed by Chris Botti and Boney James)

(I don't want to exceed the size of a post if there is one, so I'm breaking up my posters into groups)

In 2001 and 2002, the city of Jacksonville scrapped the jazz festival for budget reasons, so no festival = no posters.

Here's my 2000 (Signed by Dot Wilder)

1999 (Signed by Rick Braun)

1998

1997

1996 (Signed by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and Boney James)

1995 (Signed by David Sanborn)

1994 (Signed by Gary Starling)

1993 (Signed by Richard Elliot)

1992 (Signed by Gary Starling)

1991 (I almost had it signed by Harry Connick Jr, but after the concert I went to, he was feeling so sick he didn't come out of the tour bus for autographs)

1990 (Signed by Gary Starling)

Ah, the 80's...

1989

1988 (It doesn't get more 80s-rific than this)

1987 (Signed by Von Barlow - I love how the framer got the mat to blend perfectly with the poster. It really looks like the artist is stepping out of the poster)

1986 (Signed by Gary Starling and Von Barlow)

1986 Swierzy (The famous Polish artist Waldemar Swierzy designed the official '83 and '84 posters. He made two more ('85 and '86) in the set, although the jazz committee didn't select them for the official posters. I love having them to complete the set)

1985

1985 Swierzy

1984

1983

1981 (the first official poster, the second year of the festival, when it was still held at a small venue out in Mayport)

Those are all the ones I own. I'm in the process of moving, but after attaching these pictures I realize how long it's been since I took most of these photos. Some I just have stock photos since I never took a picture of my own, and some of my own pictures were from before I've had them autographed. I will definitely have to update them soon.

Lastly, I would include the posters I know exist, but I have yet to find. If anyone knows where I can get them, please feel free to let me know.

1981 Advertising poster - This wasn't the official poster, but instead a poster made to advertise all around town.

1982 - ??? I found this picture in a program of Dizzy playing at the '82 festival. I don't know if the logo on the shirt was also made into a poster, but it would seem to make sense. I've never seen a poster like this, so if it's out there, it'll probably take me forever to find.

1982 Advertising poster - I have seen this one come up for sale once every six months, but either have just missed it, or the seller has asked way too much money for it. There's one on eBay right now, but the seller is about $100 too high. Hopefully I'll come across one soon in the right condition at the right price.

1983 Alternate - This wasn't the official poster but was just as massed produced.

1984 Advertising

Mayport & Jacksonville Jazz Posters

Do you know where I can find out the value (dollar range) of the Mayport and Jacksonville Jazz posters? Since you have a large collection, I thought you might have some information on this.

Hi Poster owners,

A friend of mine owns an antique map and print shop, and also does framing.

A couple of tips.
Posters are generally not printed with they type of ink or on the type of paper that will last may years.

In the frame use UV protection glass to slow down light fading

Use acid free conservation quality mount board. If there is any acid in the board that comes into contact with the poster, the acid may leach out over a period of time causing foxing -- the brown "tea stains" you sometimes see on prints.

Don't dry-mount the poster -- while it may make the poster lie flat and look good in the frame, it is a process that is very expensive to reverse if at all. Collectors don't like dry mounted. In many cases drops the value to 10% of the non dry-mounted poster (Dry mounting glues the poster on to backing card)
