Richard Thompson has been high on my playlists, but I'm also starting to get pretty excited about the forthcoming Bowie album. As such I've started rotating some of his recordings into my player.
![]() An excellent album, which continues to bring pleasure to my ears. It's been reissued a few times already, but the best is the Japanese two-disc effort with a healthy dose of extra tracks on a second disc. ![]() What I think is most telling with this one is an under current of tension to what are on the surface smooth ballads and mid-tempo songs. Beneath it you hear little bits of fire and energy, perculating away. Perhaps that inevitable with Reeves Gabriel on guitar. Again, the Japanese did the reissue best with a second disc. |

Well, I'm still reading the great tome on the history of music. It's a bit technical at times, and therefore hard going, but there are more than a few "Wow" moments that really entertain (example, ever wondered where the Do Re Me Fa.... came from?).
But if I need something a little lighter I'm dipping into this: ![]() It's excellent. Organized by album release, you can follow Waits and his music through the years. The interviews are good, and even if they're a little dull (some were, after all, nothing more than stops on the way around the media to promote a release) Waits will throw in some of stories and make it all better again. What a fantastic musician he is. So it makes sense I'm currently playing this:

![]() Ochs is famous for the protest songs of the `60s but this record he tried something different. The closest I can compare this with is Tim Buckley`s Goodbye And Hello or Scott Walker`s early albums.5 stars on allmusic is accurate. He knocks it out of the ballpark on just about every song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XW5hSLCKQaw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta_iKeH4tsg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG4I2Bky5AM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd8sirz99zo

Not something I'd have thought of buying/listening to but and much to my surprise my son showed me a (used) copy he'd just bought, so I got a chance to hear it...

Sounds as unique and refreshing now as it did on initial release in the early 1970's. |
