Musicians don't get paid enough in NY clubs

Sun. 2/10: Fair Pay Music

Musicians don't get paid enough in NY clubs. The new Fair Pay Music campaign aims to change that -- let's reward the venues that treat musicians well, and demand more from the rest.

Join us this Sunday, February 10 from 4-6 pm at The Commons, 388 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.

Musicians don't get paid enough in jazz clubs ANYWHERE

...and it's not a new situation.

The problems arise from the "door gig" ..since there are far more musicians than there are venues ..

door gigs

How true.

Which is why my band opted to go for club dates instead of jazz clubs. We made good money playing for private clients -- weddings, corporate events, parties, christenings, et al. And we did get to play jazz at them.

Good to hear from you, Phil.

There is a Youtube with Harold Maburn and he's talking about he was making good money playing gig's in the 60's, and making "good money" now for gigs and its the same amount of money.

The situation regarding available work and the number of musicians reminds me of a rather wry joke.

"How do you recognise a professional saxophonist's car?

It's the one with the pizza delivery sign on the top!"

Ha!
But for real, jazz musicians get paid next to nothing (or even nothing at all.) I've played 2 hour gigs for $0. Really sad, but its all based on how much you are enjoying yourself. The better of a time you have, the less money you feel you need to balance the scale.

A sound business model if ever I heard one.

What'd I miss?

Jay, have you been running your car into heavy metal bands again?

A perplexing mystery.

I'm sure sorry you're out of pocket for it, pal. Glad you're getting the buggy back.

(It does make a good story.)

Wow.
That's a crazy story if I ever heard one. The parking brake was on, correct? And was the car on a slope towards the other house at all? If the parking brake was off and it was on a slope, I could see that happening, but only on a very steep slope... It was severely damaged? Wow.

In retrospect, probably a quite good story.
