Very nice lineup of artists. I might need to make a trip down to Savannah.

Boubacar Traoré was replaced on the Thursday night ticket with Ballaké Sissoko (kora) and Vincent Segal (cello). I'd seen them do a show at the Lucas Theatre during the 2011 SMF, and they were even more captivating from front row seats in the intimacy of the Charles Morris Center this past weekend.

Cedric Watson & Dirk Powell put on a great follow up, high energy set to the Sissoko-Segal set. I'd never seen Watson before; he's a real treasure, an accomplished performer on the squeezebox (Cajun accordian), fiddle, and he even played a native American drum someone had recently given him on a couple of songs. His singing and stage presence were equally forceful and charming. Powell played banjo, fiddle, guitar, and squeezebox.

So far the real gem of the festival for me was Ahmad Jamal on Saturday afternoon. I'd thought, well, he's in his 80s, I'll go see him out of respect for what he did in the past. Fuggetaboutit! Jamal played a long set and lengthy encores with the energy and dynamic range usually associated - at least in my mind - with younger musicians. There was nothing old fashioned about Jamal and his group, which included drummer Herlin Riley (whom we've seen here at the SMF previously in other contexts), bassist James Cammack, and percssionist Manolo Badrena. Great energy and interplay among the musicians.

Pianist Aaron Diehl, solo, this afternoon, and with his trio tomorrow.

I'm a little confused about the bass player with the group Ahmad Jamal is currently touring with. I read somewhere that bassist James Cammack is no longer with Jamal, and that Reginald Veal is with him now. The photos I can find on-line resemble Cammack more than Veal. Anyone know who's playing bass with Jamal now?
