Party Jazz

Hello all. I'm a relative newcomer to these boards, but I've already found several helpful suggestions for great new records - so thanks.

Perhaps you could put on your thinking caps and help me with this:

I've got a pretty big jazz collection, and I'm occasionally asked to DJ at bars in town. A lot of the (particularly more recent) music I enjoy would clear a place in 2 minutes, but there's still loads I can get away with. The crowds tend to be fairly broadminded musically, without knowing much about jazz - often they're quite keen to know more.

So, I suppose what I'm after are suggestions of tunes/albums you'd love to hear in a pub or bar, but which won't frighten the horses, and are still great party jazz....

Thanks.

I would definantly play John Zorns Naked City album, everyone will love and dance to it lmao. Honestly brother, I mean anything big band will probly make people look, but dance in novelty. I mean you could play some Bennie Goodman, or Duke Ellington. As far as new stuff, I can always suggest Big Bad Voodoo Daddie, its more of a punk swing kinda thing. If you want stuff with alittle more techno, electronic edge Killimanjaro Darkjazz Essemble is pretty awsome, there track Lobby is awsome. If you want a just chill setting I can suggest going with classics with "Coltrane plays the blues" and "Kind of Blue" Allot of the guitarist had some chill outings like Jim hall, Pat Martino, Grant green, and also if you wanna throw in some cool jazz stylings I would throw in some Freddie Hubbard. But when I throwin a get together, and I want things all chill, or you wanna impress the lady folk with nice vocals. I would suggest throwing on some Kurt Elling man. This guy should be way more famous then the jazz world alone. He could be bigger then Buble by a long shot.

Ta. They don't have to dance, though. Headnodding is fine, too.

How about Heath Brothers, Smilin' Billy Suite? People will recognise the sample:

Another one on Strata East, Charles Rouse, Hopscotch:

Mike Westbrook, Love Song No.1 might be good for a Sunday session:

Sleep Walker - Ai No Kawa

Woody Shaw - Sanyas (maybe start it a few minutes in)

I'd be happy to hear any of those!

Thanks very much. Will have a listen - I only know the Woody Shaw - I've played tracks off 'Rosewood' and 'Lotus Flower' before.
