I passed by Bleeker Bob's in the Village last month when I was in the city.

Didn't have a chance to go in & look around. Too bad they're closing. Another one gone.

Melody Music in Washington D.C. has closed as well. It was a great little shop on Dupont Circle that never failed to surprise me with some new nuggets to be mined at every visit. Right now my brick and morter cd shopping is pretty much confined to my once a year trip out west where Amoeba Records and to a lesser extent, Rasputin in Berkeley are still going strong...at least the last I heard!

Central London has (I hope) finally got down to the market level, providing more buyers don't drop out, causing more shops to close.

I'm pleased to say that Rays Jazz at Foyles has got a lot better. They are buying better Vinyl, not the old crap they were buying a couple of years ago. I pulled a record out of its cover about 2 or 3 years ago and there was a blue mold growing on the record. Very carefully put record back in sleeve and didn't go back in again for quite some time (Quatermass didn't have a look in)

J&B records is still going strong in Hanway street with all high quality near-mint / mint albums. Forget I said that -- I don't want all you guys going in there and stealing my records

Living in Nj we have Vintage vinyl in woodbridge. Princeton record exchange. And in bordentown Nj there's Randy now's Man Cave (memorabilia shop with a jazz section) and the Record Collector.

Must say I'm spoiled

With the information age progressing, many of these places are closing down because people are buying music online.

It's very unfortunate though and it will be missed.

and the Lenox Lounge in Harlem, which has probably been there longer than i've been on earth, is closing. very sad. a Japanese company has already bought the property but not the name.

Heard yesterday that the mega Virgin Music store in Paris has filed for bankruptcy. The prices were not great, but it was a nice venue and a reminder of how it used to be when every urban area had a record shop worth perusing. Of course the whole bookshop/record store vibe seems to be disapearing replaced by more and more clothing and high end crap stores without a soul. (imo)

The French seem to be very disturbed by that particular bankruptcy. Ours shut down some years ago, as did the US stores. I think the French were the last. Richard Branson is a shrewd businessman -- If he is selling, you have to ask why? And sell he did around 10 years ago.

I suspect that we may be heading back to the small specialist stores again, just like the 50s in the UK

We still have HMV, but not for much longer I suspect

I got a phone call from one of the record shops that I frequent to tell me that they had a pile of new albums in that I might be interested in -- Guess what I am doing on Saturday? You don't get that service from a Mega-store
