Miles Davis and John Coltrane Prestige Sets.

There are 2 sets I want to get, Miles Davis' and John Coltrane's complete prestige recordings. Since they both recorded a lot together, I was wondering if these sets over lap one another. I don't want to by both and end up with the same material on both. Anyone know if they are unique from each other?

Nope. The only overlap would be if the Trane set contained Trane's work with Miles. Which it doesn't, specifically so you'll have to get them both. But it's not like either one is light, at all. I think they're what, 13 and 16 CD's respectively? That's a lot of music there, my friend. Have no fears. I will say this...it's cheaper to do that than to buy the CD's one by one. I learned this the hard way.

How much do those sets run in general? Or, more specifically, what's the best deal you've seen them for? I'm sure they're worth every penny...

The Miles was in the $180 range, the Trane was in the low 2's.

If you're patient, you can get both off ebay, new, in the low $100.00. I bought the Coltrane on a "buy it now" for $130.00, and it was still sealed.

Cool. I've never tried to bid in an e-bay auction, but it sounds well worth it.

i have heard that the miles prestige box doesn't have any of the studio chatter available on the original albums/individual cd's. not that yr. buying these things for studio chatter, but it might be worth knowing. can anyone confirm or disconfirm this?

This German site...

http://www.zweitausendeins.de/indexengl.htm

usually has the Prestige/Riverside box sets really cheap (though the shipping can be high to the U.S.).

I think I picked up the Coltrane for about $75!

Cool

These days your better off getting the individual releases that have been remastered and sound so much better.

As has been mentioned there is the overlap with what he did with Trane. There is also an overlap with the Sonny Rollins Prestige Box. Most of the Prestige seem to have some sort of overlap.

Also, as has been mentioned you don't get any of the studio chatter in the Boxes.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is any overlap on the boxes. Theoretically, as mentioned above, there would be duplication of Coltrane's playing with the Davis group, but the Davis group material isn't on the Coltrane box. Therefore, you can buy them both without worrying about the overlap.

I was stuck in the quandary of purchasing the boxes or the individual cds not too long ago, and I ended up popping for the box. Normally, I always go for individual discs because I like the cover art, updated mastering, etc. But in this case I popped for the boxes because there were SO MANY individual discs covered. The Coltrane set alone would take 24 (I think?) individual releases to duplicate! The Miles set takes about 13 discs.

That, at least, was my reasoning for going with the boxes. Plus they sounded fine on my pitiful system (or at least no worse than anything else sounds on it).

I have both of these sets. The Miles is only 8 discs and can be had fairly inexpensively from the record clubs (I don't remember whether I got mine from BMG or Columbia House, but I recall paying around $50 for it).

The Coltrane set is 16 cds. It does NOT include the sideman apperances he made with Miles. The reasoning given in the liner notes is that the Coltrane set was already large and expensive, and they didn't want to make it more expensive by adding the Miles material given that most people interested in the Trane porbably already had the Miles (the Miles box was released first). I got mine used for about $100 - the retail price on this one is pretty high.

Personally, I would recommend going for the Trane first. I wasn't familiar with most of Trane's Prestige material before I got the box, and now, two years after buying it, I'm still blown away by it and I still wonder why it took me so long to explore this period of his music. OTOH, I already had all the Miles/Trane albums on Prestige when I got the Miles which is about half the set. All of the material on the set is enjoyable, but I can't help feeling that some of the earlier sessions could have been better than they were. In other words, the Trane set has been more important for me in terms of more fully appreciating Trane's legacy than the Miles set has been in terms of more fully appreciating Miles' legacy. But they're both great, and if you have the cash to get them both, you won't be dissappointed with either.

PS: FWIW, in the booklets to these sets they show you what the original record covers looked like. Full color for leader dates, B&W for sideman appearances.

Haven't checked what's available, but BMG is having a 50% off sale and I believe a deal on shipping as well, may just be for today not sure, didn't check it out, but they did have some records that might interest all of you, a couple of weeks ago, so check that out, but not sure about any of Miles boxed sets. doubt they have them, but they did at one time.

The info came in this afternoon 07-29-05
