Eastern music and Coltrane

Had Coltrane lived longer he would have traveled to India to study eastern music. Wondering if he had that chance and brought this style to jazz, how many other artist would have followed and done the same thing?

Bill Cole's otherwise uninteresting and poorly edited book takes this subject into some detail.
He talks of the sufi teachings, etc in conjunction to Coltrane's music.

I would have loved to hear what would have come out of Coltrane being more exposed to Indian music. I love Alice Coltrane's Impulse albums and I could only imagine how amazing they would have been if John had been on them.

I bet there would have been a significant eastern influence through the seventies if Coltrane would have lived and gone that direction.

It took me a long time to appreciate them, but I love his last recordings. I love the vibrato in his playing on the Stellar Regions album. His playing just takes hold of me.

Even without studying eastern music, it was so apperant in his playing. All that modal stuff. Way ahead of his time. Everyone is still trying to catch up to him.

It's seems to me than in the two last years of his short live, Coltrane was going in somme completely different direction than eastern music or modal one.
So, i'm not sure than the question have any pertinence.

for what it's worth I find Coltrane's modal and Indian styled music his most interesting. If only he had lived longer......
