Donna Lee m30?
Hey all, long time no post:
Measure 30 of Donna Lee- the line is clearly(? to me) Bdim for 2 beats and the V7 Eb7 for 2 beats. But the changes are Bb-7 Eb7. Who the hell plays a major 3rd on the down beat of 1 on a minor 7 chord. Oh yeah, and why does it sound cool? |

Don't forget the key signature. Key of Ab, so the first note of measure 30 is Db.
You can think of the notes as a rootless m9 arpeggio on the Bbm7: Db = b3 F = 5 Ab = b7 C = 9 In measures 3 and 19, beat three, a similar figure is used but with a D natural on the Bb7 giving a rootless 9 arpeggio: D = 3 F = 5 Ab = b7 C = 9 Either way, not diminshed. There is a straight diminished arpeggio sounded by the first 5 notes of measure 28. |

Thanks Joe,
I should have checked other sources. The RB I was going from clearly has a D natural on beat 1 of m30, not Db. It did seem awfully ballsy, even for Bird, to play a major 3rd on that Bb-7. I checked my other sources and of course it's Db in all other leads sheets I checked. Thank you again. |
