Neil Ardley's "A Symphony of Amaranths", one of the most important British jazz albums ever recorded is being reissued for the first time on CD since its original release in 1971. Amongst the stellar line-up of musicians who appear on the album are names such as Henry Lowther, Harold Beckett, Derek Wadsworth, Ray Premru, Barbara Thompson, Dave Gelly, Don Rendell, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Stan Tracey, Karl Jenkins, Alan Branscombe, Frank Ricotti, Chris Laurence, Jeff Clyne, Jon Hiseman plus vocals from Ivor Cutler and Norma Winstone. This reissue is limited to 1000 copies only and is being made available on the Dusk Fire label. The official release date is 21 January 2013 but the album is also being sold from the Dusk Fire website. This is a very welcome reissue. I landed my copy today and am listening now. A very welcome reissue indeed Roger! This is my first encounter with this music, but not my first with Ardley...it's a superb album. And, it could have been recorded yesterday - time has not dimmed its brilliance!

The sound is great - it's obviously been remastered with great care - and the repackaging presents a very good overview of the recording session with detailed notes by Dave Gelly, a journalist and musician who played on the date.

Those involved in the album's reissue are to be commended for making it available again!

Sambrasa, thanks for this, looks really excellent. Nothing showing about it on the Cuneiform website but I'm cheered by this news particularly as there currently seems to be a dearth of British reissues and archives (other than the great Neil Ardley Symphony of Amaranths).

Bob Downes 1970 album Deep Down Heavy is finally receiving its first reissue on CD next month. This will be released on the Esoteric label.

Apologies if this issue has already been raised, but does anyone know if the forthcoming changes to copyright in the UK will mean that some releases that are available at present will be withdrawn, as they would no longer be out of copyright? Have I understood the changes correctly?

As I understand it, if you are referring to what has been informally termed "Cliff's Law" in which the extension of copyright sound recording increases from 50 years to 70 years from the date of the recording, then EU member states have two years from the date of entry into force of the Directive to make the changes to their national law. The date of entry into force is twenty days from the date of publication of the Directive in the Official Journal of the EU. The Directive 2011/77/EU was published on 11 October 2011 and this therefore means that the change should become part of UK law by 01 November 2013.

To answer your question (and I am not a IP lawyer so this is just a guess) anything released prior to the date of implementation will either be withdrawn or continue to circulate but future re-releases will benefit from the extended copyright so will in many cases, attract a premium for licensed release. Hence Sony now have cannily released: “The Bob Dylan Copyright Extension Collection, Vol. 1” in restricted quantitites which have sold out (I believe).

Thanks for your reply, Roger. I've just read that the new law will only apply to music originally issued from the beginning of 1963, meaning that 1950s and early 1960s re-issues will not be affected.
