Any tips
Hi there,
Hopefully someone here can help me out. I am not necessarily a Jazz musician, I do study and listen to Jazz, along with my phoney books. Right now taking this study from a distance as I've spent the past 5 years studying Dhrupad and am basically new to harmony. Bearing that in mind, I was hoping an experienced Jazz musician could listen to a piece I improvized (no composition). There's some crude harmonic devices I was attempting to use, along with some Dhrupad theory. Any advice or critique would be much appreciated, only had a guitar for 2 weeks (at time of recording) so if my techique is overly crude there may be some association there. Video |

Sounds beautiful. I know very little about the style of music you have been studying (and I am not a very experienced jazz musician either) but I am sure its influence is strong in your playing. From a harmonic standpoint I would describe the piece as having a drone note with melody playing over it in a minor tonality. Along the way you are exploring various possibilities over ther drone. From a more spiritual perspective the piece was relaxing and meditative.

Glad you like it man, I was attempting to add harmony in there but I guess it doesn't show enough as this was recorded in an open-tuning and the first diatonic position never really dissapears.
The chords end up transposed over the first chord and that makes it come out modal, since that time (2 months) have worked that out to make the changes more distinct (using dropped standard tuning). Should post a new video Glad you like it man that means a lot to me |

Repertoire,
There's not much relationship between what you're playing and jazz, so I'm not in a position to critique it. What kind of advice are you seeking? Do you want to know more about creating harmonic progressions? Cheers, Jer |

Think I need to record something more appropriate, it'll probably be a month or so before that happens.
Trying to bridge these two genres and am mainly curious, when I get more harmony incorporated what Jazz musicians think of it as the end product will be pretty related Thank you for the input I'll get a more appropriate video up when possible |

Hi again Repertoire. I just wanted to add something. It occurred to me today (whilst listening to a Steve Reich cd) that you might be interested in an approach towards playing music taken by Kenny Werner, who is the author of a book called Effortless Mastery. You may, of course, already be familiar with it.
Kenny Werner's philosophy towards music embraces a spiritual/meditative approach, without reccommending or pushing any specific spiritual doctrine (allowing the reader to use what ever way works best for them). Although written by a jazz musician, the book is aimed at musicians of any genre and can also be of use to anyone wishing to gain mastery in any skill. I have found his book and cd very useful. Just thought I'd share that in case it was of use. Mat. |
