If you like sax trios check out albums by the Thomas Chapin Trio: Anima, Third Force, Sky Piece, Menagerie Dreams, Night Bird Song and Ride. No one else quite like him, a genius on the sax and flute.

Cheers, Robert

Jimmy Giuffre

I have an lp The Jimmy Jiuffre 3 Music For People, Birds, Butterflies and Mosquitos. It's a piano less trio. Giuffre-flute, clarinet, tenor sax, Kiyoshi Tokunaga-bass, Randy Kaye-percussion. This is one of my favorites.

This thread has got quite long ...

Has this been mentioned?

Would highly recommend it.

My favourite Lacy of all is technically a quartet, but in effect most of it is a trio, Michel Graillier playing a very low profile on the album, mainly adding tinkly free figures and chords at various points. Aldo Romano and JFJC were always a mighty engine room, capable of handling everything from straight mainstream to the far reaches of free.

http://www.discogs.com/Steve-Lacy-Ep...elease/2462298 also reissued at various times as "Steve Lacy Plays Monk (in Paris)"

The record has about all you could want from a jazz trio (+ 0.5). And it's one of those albums you can hear, and work to, at one end, or listen intently to, follow the lines and/or rhythms of any particular instrument, at the other extreme.
