Were you not aware of the 7 cd BIG box which came before the 2 Selects? It contains the "meat" of Hill's BN recordings. I believe it was released somewhere in the mid to late 90s.

They are in the area of Amazing Music. You can always go to Amazon and listen to samples. I think Alypius, V1p and JETman described this music well above.

I think it's tricky to categorize jazz. Hill has a certain style that's uniquely his, just like McLean, Miles, Shorter, Rollins, etc, etc. I personally think he's amongst the top 10-20 jazz musicians who ever lived. But ultimately it comes down to: Do I like his music or not? I've been listening to him all day and ain't tired yet!

I think my top 10 would be...

Miles Davis
Duke Ellington
Charles Mingus
Thelonious Monk
Andrew Hill
Gil Evans
John Coltrane
Keith Jarrett
Thomas Chapin
Wayne Shorter

And none of them are really cateorizable! In addition, it was very rare for any of them to put out a bad album.

Cheers, Robert
