Uebel Flutes

Something reminded me (God knows what), of the Uebel flute. My Flute teacher at school acquired one, and I acquired a loan for a couple of weeks. What I remember is a very heavy instrument, that was going to take a lot of practice to hold for any length of time, but a beautiful clear ringing tone that could only be matched by the top silver flutes (the uebel is aluminium)

Are they still around and in use (Google wasn't much help) or did their weight kill them off.

Anyone who played one -- were they as good as I remember, or is that time clouding the issue

Just spotted one being played at a folk gig on television

Obviously no Flute players on AAJ hence no replies

Ah well uniqueness is such a burden

Just BTW: Do you realise that "uebel" is a German word meaning "bad"?

As does Bose I believe -- who make speakers

The Uebel family had been making musical instruments in Germany since the 19th century

All my research keeps coming up with the same thing gorgeous tone but too heavy to use for any length of time. "Flautist's shoulder" is or was an occupational hazard, even with a light silver flute
