Final chord Lennie Tristano Deliberation

Hi all,

I've been listening to a lot of Lennie Tristano recently. In particular the solo album "the new tristano".

I just listened to the track "Deliberation" and thought the final chord was beautiful, so I was curious to find out exactly what it is. The general sound of it reminded me of a major 6 chord (it has that "smiling sound" if you know what I mean!).

I'm a horn player so I'm used to taking down single lines but am pretty hopeless when it comes to working out chords. I was wondering if any of you could lend me your ears??

I think it may be (or something similar):

Eb Bb Eb F G Bb C Eb

(From lowest pitch to highest)

So a Eb6/9 sound. I think I can hear that Eb at the top and the middle Bb ringing through. And I think there's some fifths (or maybe it's fourths) lower down in the piano giving that "bare" sound in the lower register. But I could be WAY off here!

Thanks for any help!

You are on the right track, Morph. I like your description of the "smiling sound". Putting the final chord in the context of the key should clear everything up.

"Deliberation" is based on the chords to "Donna Lee", and is also in the usual key of Ab. So the final chord is Abmaj13. But your notes are right on target. Functionally in Ab:

Eb (5th)
Bb (9th)
F (13th)
G (maj7th)
C (3rd)
