Tempest - Bob Dylan

I've only heard this album through one time
and must say I'm very very impressed. I could
never have imagined that in 2012 I'd enjoy a new
Bob Dylan release to such an extent.

Last night I heard tracks 1-8 in the house/on the
HiFi - then I had a bit of driving to do so took the
CD with me.

Track 9, Tempest (a long song about the sinking
of the Titanic) was playing and it occured to me I was
driving past the old H&W shipyard in Belfast where the
Titanic was built.

This long track ended just before I arrived at my destination,
the coastal walk along Belfast Lough at Holywood. The lough
is the first stretch of water the Titanic sailed on as it left Belfast
harbour.

The Belfast lough is also part of the main sea route from Belfast
to Liverpool.

In keeping with the above coincidence, Liverpool is mentioned in
the next track 'Roll On John', a John Lennon tribute
song, and that was the next track I heard as I headed for home.

I pre-ordered it from Deep Discount because they had it on sale for only $5.99. I'm hoping it will arrive in the mail today.

Every morning over the past week or so I have been hearing this record, two or three tracks at a time. There is no doubt about it that this is a very very special Bob Dylan record and should not be missed by anyone who may still be undecided about purchase.

Sadly I didn't get on with this album at all. It starts okay, but really runs out of ideas/steam.

For me the title track - which runs almost 14 minutes I think - just goes on and on and on, with only the remnants of a melody. I found it monotonous in the extreme.. When I think back to the longer story songs of old, Dylan never forgot to include compelling music along with the lyric - here it just goes wrong for me.

Elsewhere the lyrics sometimes slip into being trite and shallow.

Add in the ridiculous packaging - the cover art is horrendous, imo. There is a "Special Edition" out that adds a booklet with some pictures of Dylan - and nothing more. No extra music, nothing.

To top it off, the poor guys voice has really taken a beating.

Love Dylan - of course. And maybe we should be glad he's still bothering. But I found this to be a long way from his best, and actually not near even his middling work.
