What a very strange review by Jack Massarik placing "flower-power" in the 70s when it actually was just a passing phenomenon in 1967, implying that it led Tubby on to hard drugs and then to needing heart surgery. A typical right-wing distortion of history.

'Little Giant Steps' is a terrific album and I'm really chuffed to have it my collection. Simon's sleeve notes are as usual excellent. So all in all a package that should find a home on anybody's shelves (my opinion).I just wish I could place it next to Simon's book on Tubby.

Hmmm....it was a bit surreal.

Tubby's health did fail due to his lifestyle and years of excess, but by the time he needed open heart surgery he was clean of anything heavy.

Many of Masserik's reviews are weird. I stopped reading his stuff when he spent 50% of a review of a friend's gig criticising what she was wearing before condemning the gig in a flurry of non sequiturs

Here's another weird one.

Apparently Tubby's recordings are "uneven at best."

They were trotting this bunk out half a century ago!

Wow! I believe this to be a "golden" period of Tubby's creative talents. I cannot wait for this release.

A Tubby Update

I've had a couple of e-mails from people who have asked whether they can have a copy of the sleeve notes for the new Proper box and Acrobat Tubby releases. I thought it might be useful to add here that anyone who wants them can e-mail me via my website www.simonspillett.com

As the 40th anniversary of Tubby's death approaches next month, there are a couple of Hayes-related gigs which may be of interest; on Friday May 17th I'm presenting an evening of Tubby talk, as well as playing some of his music in the company of the Chris Ingham trio, at The Hunter Club in Bury St. Edmunds and on Saturday June 8th, drummer Miles Levin - son of the late, great Tony Levin - and I will be performing a special tribute concert in Shrewsbury.

England's Late Jazz Great

Having lost my vinyl copy of this IARJ album many years ago I have just bought the CD version which contains 4 additional tracks.

The version of "Souriya" on my copy is a repeat of one of the additional tracks - "Love Letters" by the Jazz Couriers. I am fortunate in having a copy of the whole of this session from the BBC broadcast from 1961. So all is not lost. I also have the Harry South session from which "The Goblin" comes.

This got me thinking. As all of these tracks appear to have come from BBC broadcasts, does anyone have the complete broadcasts of any of the sessions from which the other tracks come?

Jazz Journal

Just to let you know that this month's Jazz Journal features an excerpt from my book on Tubby.

Yes - it does actually exist!

What news on this release? It is now "next month". What label should we look out for?
