I'm gonna have to think about this one. It'll definitely not be confined to just 3, and will include Lightcap's Deluxe album as well.

Well I guess I need to get that record, seeing as how it's cropping up on so many of the posts.

The closest thing we have to consensus?

EDIT:
I have Bigmouth on FSNT, which I enjoy -- but it hasn't "blown me away." Is Deluxe comparable? A big step forward?

Atomic - Retrograde/Here Comes Everybody
Adam Lane's Full Throttle Orchestra - Ashcan Rantings
Chris Lightcap's Bigmouth - Deluxe
Angles - Epileptical West
Darren Johnston - The Edge Of The Forest
Harris Eisenstadt - Canada Day (all of them - they will be regarded as classics amongst the jazz canon in years to come; mark my words)
Mary Halvorson Quintet - Bending Bridges
The Convergence Quartet - Song/Dance
Tony Malaby - Novela
William Parker - Petit Oiseau

Sorry, I couldn't keep it to just three. Quantifying is impossible when it comes to music for me.

Here are tracks 1, 2 and 3 from Deluxe:

I haven't listened to the FSNT Bigmouth album yet (it's on order) but those three tracks should give you a pretty good idea. Having said that though, i was on the fence literally for years before finally buying Deluxe and the 3 songs on youtube, although really good, didn't really sell it to me for whatever reason. For some reason once i got the actual album it all fell into place.

Ridiculously impossibly hard etc, my top 3 are:

Henry Threadgill - This Brings Us To Vol 1

Harris Eisenstadt - Guewel

Steve Lehman - Travail, Transformation and Flow

honourable mentions to Joe Morris's Today on Earth and Ben Allison's Little Things Run the World and Carla Bley and Darren Johnston and and and
I posted the above in February 2010. Some time in April 2010 i would have heard John Hollenbeck's Eternal Interlude for the first time. I'd be hard pressed to pick what would get bumped from my top 3 in order to accommodate it, but something would have to be.

My favorite track is off Lightcap's Deluxe is #5: "The Clutch". I can't find a version on YouTube, but if you have Spotify, you can hear it there.

Probly just at the beggining of the five year mark, but this album is amazing. And will probly stay with me for a long time. Not only is it a complex offering, but it doesnt go over ones head. It stay firmly planted to a point where you almost hate to let the last notes ring. And its got everything from middle eastern melody, to folky escapades, to progressive rock take offs. One track even has someone beatboxing under a soundscape. And to those few who are reading this and think maybe thats alittle to much stuff into one. Each individual song almost melds into another perfectly. To add to the hype of this album alone, the main man on this album Tigran Hamasyan is a relatively young man. Becoming one of the first (to my knowledge) Armernian jazz icons of a modern era with only a handfull of recordings on the table.
