Royal Garden Blues Help

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9I7BolXURcE[1]

I was trying to learn this rendition of Royal Garden Blues by ear, but I can't seem to figure out the notes of the final riff that they played at the end 3 times was, if anyone could help me out that would be really great, thank you.

There are a lot of great versions of this tune; I have another Ellington version, a Basie version, Charlie Christian, Django, Bix, The Titan Hot Seven, but my favorite is this one:

Someone here will help you sort out the the lick at the end, but it isn't part of the canon (if you're simply learning the tune so you can play it when it's called on the bandstand).

It's basically one of those I7 dominant scale with blue notes licks in Bb. The main horn plays:

C# D Bb G Ab G F C# D F Bb

The second horn plays some harmony notes here and there that occasionally pop out, like the 3rd time it sounds overall more like:

C# D Bb F Ab G F C# D F Bb

That should get you started. Sorry it's not in notation, but since you know how the lick sounds it should be easy enough to figure out where the notes are in relation to each other.

Hey, no apology needed, thank you so much, exactly what I was looking for.

I also just can't seem to figure out the notes of the lick they play that starts at about 00:14 and goes to about 00:16, I'm fairly sure that it starts on A and that the last two notes are E and F, but I can't quite make out the middle few notes, if anyone could help me out that would be really great, thank you.

In this part of the tune we are in F blues. The lick at 00:14 is on the V7 chord (C7) resolving to F somewhere between 00:15 and 00:16. The straight notes are:

G F Eb E F

The trick is to make the notes bluesy, especially the first growling G and the Eb which is slightly bent upwards to approach the E.

There are a couple of other notes at the end of this lick, but those sound like the guitar noodling around and I assume you just want the main horn notes.

Glad to help out. I really like working on tunes I haven't heard before.

This one starts out with a couple variations on basic F blues, then around 1:11 you hear something like F7 Bo7 F7sus/C F7#5 and the following Bb7 chord becomes I7 in Bb where it was previously IV7 in F. They then finish out the tune as a more standard Bb jazz blues.

So cool.
