Woody Shaw, Valery Ponomarev, Wynton Marsalis and Brian Lynch immediately come to mind... Lynch was the last trumpeter with the Jazz Messengers.

After looking through this chronology, I see a lot of familiar trumpet names -- some kind of unexpected (although I did know that Chuck Mangione was with the Messengers for a bit) and it looks like some of them only made a few gigs.

Bill Hardman
Chuck Mangione
Jimmy Owens
Randy Brecker
Eddie Henderson
Shunzo Ono
Wallace Roney
Terrence Blanchard
Michael Philip Mossman

Also interesting to note that James "Blood" Ulmer (guitar) made five gigs with the Messengers in 1973.

Offcourse we can't!
Art Blakey had this special sense for trumpet players. We cna't forget Winton Marsalis also.. He "invented" him. As I know, he took on the road whit him in 1982 when Winton was only 18

Oh man, MAJOR oversight! Thanks, Mr. Kenyatta.

Say, does anyone know if Charles Tolliver played with the Jazz Messengers?
