Best of 2005

Sure, I know it's only early December, but I've compiled my pretty-short-list of what I really liked this year. I'd like to see what others liked in 2005.

Kenny Wheeler - What Now?

Either/Orchestra - Ethiopiques

Joshua Redman - Momentum (saw them live!)

Monk and Coltrane at Carnegie Hall

John Surman - Way Back When

Joe Lovano - Joyous Encounter

Jessica Williams - At Yoshi's Vol II

Garage a Trois - Outre Mer

Chales Lloyd - Jumping the Creek

Anat Cohen - Place and Time

Terrence Blanchard - Flow

Nguyen Le - Walking on a Tiger's Tail

Kurt Rosenwinkel - Deep Song

Mingus Big Band - I Am Three

Steve Turre - The Spirits Up Above

And yes.... Jason Miles - Miles to Miles (makes me smile)

Best Reissue - Andrew!!!

Best Discovery of 2005 - Graham Collier (everything, but esp Down Another Road)

Happy Holidays!

Some of this year's favourites actually came out at the back end of last year, but I didn't catch up with them until this year. I've included them anyway.

Fantasy - Harold Mabern
Too Damn Hot - Lonnie Smith
Up City - Calvin Newborn
Boogaloo to the Beastie Boys - Reuben Wilson & Andrew Beals
This is it! - Melvin Sparks
What's new - Jimmy Ponder
All Soul - Houston Person
Fun House - Reuben Wilson
Live at 3361*BLACK 1st & 2nd - Junior Mance

PLUS - one that I've been trying to get for some time, but my importer's suppliers seem to be both permanently out of stock: Calvin Newborn - New Born.

Favourite reissues
A Night in Roppungi - Etta Jones & Houston Person
Brown Sugar - Freddie Roach
Say it loud - Lou Donaldson
This is Ernie Andrews

If you didn't buy it, you're unlikely to think it's one of your favourites.

Yeah, but I've bought quite a few... maybe a couple hundred CDs. Without looking at each CDs release date, how can I remember which ones are from 2005?

I haven't bothered with that; if it came out towards the end of 2004 but I didn't catch it until this year, I've counted it. Anyway, you don't have to look at them all; just the ones you think are candidates.

Well, I cheat. I load most of the CDs I buy into iTunes and the year they came out is listed so I simply sort for the year and then pick the ones I liked the best. And then I can also arrange playlists by year. Kind of fun, for instance to listen to all my CDs from 1959.

Cheers,

Mehldau - Day Is Done (with my thanks to those who recommended it!!!)
Wheeler - What Now?
Monk and Coltrane

I can't remember what else I bought came out in 2005. I love Steve Bernstein's "Diaspora Hollywood", for example, but I think it came out in 2004 (although I bought it in 05 - from someone's suggestion on a list about a year ago)
