Chris, do your question marks mean "Who is John Carter?"
Or do they mean "Why would you ever pick John Carter?" Whether it's the first or the second, my response would be "Just listen to this!"

John Carter Records
Castles of Ghana, for sure!
Others (they're all different, and all amazing): Night Fire (a quintet that features Carter's amazing melody lines and some phenomenal soloing) Tandem 1 and 2 (duo w/ Bobby Bradford.. do you like telepathy?) There are some harder to find items-- like Horace Tapscott's "Dark Tree" (2cds), Richard Grossman's "In The Air" (also w/ Alex Cline and Ken Filiano..!!), and a super rare Vinny Golia lp called "Spirits in Fellowship" (also w/ alex cline, and the cline/carter action will totally blow you away.. its like they are wired together). Yeah. John Carter. |

I'm a bit surprised that nobody has mentioned Buddy DeFranco (unless I missed it)... not even an honorable mention?
He's my top choice. I've also heard some wonderful playing by Eddie Daniels.

I was surprised as well, especially since there was a feature article about him on this very website just last week. http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=23728 |
