O!
I just wrote him an email (sent to his website) about how much I love and appreciate his music! I doubt he ever got the chance to read it.... I'm very sad. ... |

Oh, no.... yet another tremendous loss to jazz. R.I.P. Andrew, and thank you for all that gorgeous music.

How, sad this news is. Andrew Hill was one of the greats of the modern era, he will be missed.

I hope Mr. Hill took satisfaction in his last years in the (unbearably drawn-out) re-release of so much of his back catalogue.
Many, many years from now, his music will still be heard. He captured something of the dark time through which he lived (I'm thinking of early-to-mid sixties America). If his popularity lags somewhat today, it may have to do with the individuality of his style-- and I think we Americans can be slow to embrace artists who part company with American optimism. Anyway-- I know what music I'll be listening to tonight. And I'm looking forward to it. |

I am literally in a state of shock. Although we knew of his illness and the inevitable decline in a fight against terminal cancer, it is still hard to accept.
He was my favorite pianist-bar none. I had the privilege of seeing him perform twice-once with his quartet and once in a rare solo concert where my wife and I were in the first row. So close, that we could feel the vibrations of the piano as he played. After the first set, Andrew came downstairs to chat with a few admirers who had waited to meet with him in the cafe. We had the rare opportunity to speak with him briefly and sit down and listen to some stories. I will always cherish those memories and the music that will live on. God Bless You Andrew. LWayne |
